Re: RL-33 Load Data

I see you are in the same fix I was with my various chamberings when I got my hands on some of the first RL-33 in the country.

I used it in:

6mm-284 with the 105 berger match hybrid target
300 RUM with 230 gr Berger match hybrid target
7mm-375 Ruger with 180 gr Berger match hybrid target
257 Weatherby with 110 accubonds

I believe a good place to start is to begin load development with a near max charge of Retumbo, suggested my Hodgdon, for each of your cartridges.

I just looked up the 338 RUM with a 250 gr bullet on Hodgdon's site. Min is 97 and max is 101 gr, a compressed load. You could start at 98 or 99 and work up. I have a feeling that it might be too slow for that combination and you will run out of room before you equal Retumbo. It depends on your OAL. It usually works best for the heaviest for caliber bullets.

Kirby did some testing with RL-33 and says seating the bullet into the rifling it helps to lower ES.

Re: RL-33 Load Data

Thanks for the input it gives me somewhere to start. My problem is that most of my rifles are factory that have been rechambered since I'm still working on college and are shorter barrels with standard twists. From what you suggest it sounds like the only chambering I have that might work for this powder is my Dakota with the 208's I have. Most my other rifles wont stabilize the heaviest bullets for the caliber. Sure hope it works for something I have at the moment since I just bought 3 pounds.

Re: RL-33 Load Data

Its an improved 284 my buddy had a reamer made up for. the 284 shehane has 15thou taper and a 35 degree neck. This has a 10 thou taper and a 40 degree neck. It holds 5 more grains of 4831sc then the factory 284 which has a 25 thou taper and a 35 degree neck

Re: RL-33 Load Data

Idaho tracker,

I think you can use RL-33 with your 240 Weatherby and the 6mmAI and the 105s. I didn't say the heaviest bullet was an absolute. My 257 Weatherby and 6mm-284 are not using the heaviest but close.

I just found a RL-33 load for the 338 RUM and a 250 gr bullet on Alliant's website.
Max load of 106 gr for velocity of 2,988 from a 24" barrel.

So I guess you can give RL-33 a try in every rifle you mentioned!
