Reduced 300 RUM loads?

Guys, have any of you played around with reduced loads in 300 RUM if so what powder / bullet combo are you using. I have about two hundred 220gr MK’s I want to shoot up just for plinking. I don’t have any experience with reduced loads. Will a small fast burning powder charge of even work in such a big case with a heavy bullet. Need some suggestions as far as powder goes? Should I try lighter bullets instead of the 220’s? Or, scrap the whole idea and leave the reduced loads for smaller rifle rounds?

Re: Reduced 300 RUM loads?

I load a lot of reduced loads for bigger rifles, mostly 300wm, and 7mm Rem mag.
The best powder for these is sr4759, but for anything bigger than .308, or the biggest .308s xmp5744 is your best bet. Ive shot the 220 smk’s over as much as 43 grains of the stuff. Book data ive seen is 30-38gr.
Of course, if youre thinking about lighter bullets, send me a pm. The 220SMK is the bullet I shoot most, and id be willing to trade if ive got something you want. Ive got .308 cal bullets as light as 90 grains. Ive got reduced data for them as well.

Re: Reduced 300 RUM loads?

Abinok, I would like to get some load data for the RUM with 220’s if you have any also 7mm Mag with 150 & 168 SMK’s with the SR4759. The only thing is the last time I checked around for this powder I couldn’t find any. If my memory serves me right SR4759 is shotgun propellant made by IMR correct… XMP5744 I have never heard of? I tried to pm you but it would not work.

AA-3100 From 71.0 grains to 85.0 grains
AA-4064 From 58.5 grains to 65.0 grains
AA-4350 From 62.0 grains to 69.0 grains
AA-xmp5744 From 38.0 grains to 57.0 grains
AA-8700 From 81.7 grains to 106.0 grains
AR-2217 From 73.0 grains to 89.0 grains
AR-2218 From 80.5 grains to 100.5 grains
H-870 From 81.1 grains to 104.0 grains
H-1000 From 73.4 grains to 92.0 grains
H-4831 From 68.0 grains to 81.5 grains
H-5010 From 92.0 grains to 95.5 grains
H-50BMG From 95.0 grains to 105.5 grains
IMR-4350 From 73.0 grains to 77.0 grains
IMR-4831 From 68.3 grains to 79.7 grains
IMR-7828 From 70.8 grains to 87.0 grains
Magnum From 77.1 grains to 85.0 grains
MRP From 73.0 grains to 78.0 grains
N-170 From 71.7 grains to 89.6 grains
Retumbo From 78.2 grains to 96.1 grains
RL-19 From 70.0 grains to 75.0 grains
RL-22 From 71.5 grains to 80.0 grains
RL-25 From 72.3 grains to 91.5 grains
WXR From 71.3 grains to 77.9 grains

Yes sr4759 is a shotgun powder produced by IMR. Its a very low density cylendrical powder with great low load density ignition characteristics. It comes in 8oz containers. Its my understanding that hodgen recentyl bought out IMR, so well see if that changes. The xmp5744 is made by accurate arms.
For the 7mm REM mag either bullet will do well over 28 to 35 grains of this powder. YOu should have velocitys on the order of 1800fps on the low end. Ive loaded as light as 21 grains under a 90 grain varmit hp bullet for this caliber.Makes for a very cheap, accurate, and deadly combo on small criters out to 150 or so. Lets you shoot your big gun for practice unstead of a 22. If you work toward the low end on this powder, watch for low pressures indicated by a failure to seal at the mouth. Just watch for soot on the outside of the case necks. Not dangerous or anything, just messy.
Feel free to email if you like.
