Re: Re 17 / H4831 sc

hey I wouldn't use 4831 in the 308.Its to slow of a powder for the 308.but for the R17 you should be able to load up for the 165gn bullets.but I have no infoo to base on myself.just the info that a guy is useing it to load for the 208gn A-max in a 308.

OK just went to their web site and they are useing 50gn of R17 with a 165 gn bullet.so I would back off about 4-5 grains and start from there working up till I started to see pressure signs.but you can always use R15,varget,4895,or even 4064.these are really the go to powders for a 308 in my opinion.

so be safe and good shooting.

Re: Re 17 / H4831 sc

one thing to look at is this.you have a 60-65gn difference in bullet weight.pushing the heavier bullet takes more pressure to do so.and you want get that much if any accuracy if loaded with 4831.I am not saying by no means that one cannot use 4831.its just to slow of a burning powder to lite up a 165gn bullet with good results.

and I just looked at hodgdons web site and they do not post 4831 for the 308 in any type of bullet weight.but you can use the R17 for the 208gn A-max or a 210gn smk or berger bt.thtas if you do not mind the recoil.me and a friend are useing 47-48gn of R17 to get about 2700fps with one of the two bullets.but I wouls suggest to start up with about 43-44gn.then you can work up for it.and they fly really good for use.just depends on your barrel length to how much you need to start with.another guy is shooting them out of a 20 inch barrel with 46 -47gn with a 208gn A-max getting about 2600fps.

but hey this is something that I would do and my opinion.so take it with a grain of salt.

don't get me wrong i'm listening to you... *
matter of fact i weigh'd out 49.0gr of re 17 just to see what it looks like...
pretty scary its rite to the neck.. with 165/168 bullet it look like a compressed load... the gun is 700 HB 26" 1-9tw

* guess we'll have to let the 4831 slide i'll find planty of use for it

between the 168 an 165 there is only about 50+ bullets so its no biggy
it will be a plus if the re 17 works out though..

thanks..

Re: Re 17 / H4831 sc

hey they guy who started the 208gn A-max loading started out with a 48gn load of R17 then he back off a grain.so now he is useing 47gn.so you may be able to use 47-48gn of R17 and be safe witth a 165gn bulet.but if you have Quick load or something like it you could really tell what/where to start.but nowing that you need less for a heavier bullet and a little more for a lighter bullet it should work.might need to ask if some one with quick load can help out.and with your 1:9 twist you might be able to use less powder.we are useing a 1:10 ,1:11 1/4 and a 1:12 twist.the 1:12 is a 20 inch tube getting about 2600fps.and the 1:10 is a 28 inch getting if I am not mistakeing 2800fps.mine a little less.but you shold really get a 208-210gn bullet to fly.even a 165-168gn bullet should fly like a rocket out of your barrel with less powder.
