preliminary loadind test in 7stw&WC 872

I started working up a load in my 26" lilja barreled bansner built 700.with 160 accubonds, fed 215 primers
93 gr. 3172 fps
94 gr. 3232 fps
95 gr 3258 fps just a hint of extr. mark, slighty tight bolt lift
96 gr. 3276 fps, eject. mark, sticky extr, and .004 casehead expansion. think I can make it work!
will check accuracy as time permits.

You are using way to slow of powder in this round for that bullet weight. I would try H-1000 or R-22 even IMR-7828 is a good one. I think you will find that you will get more velocity with out all the pressure with the powders I just listed.

ok but the hogdon #27 calls for a max load of 80.7 gr of H1000 for 3084 fps, how ya figure wc 872 is too slow?
its the same burn rate as H870 and and max load for it is 90.0 gr at 3097 fps at 46,100 cup pressure, the H1000 max load is 51,500 cup.

My advice is never use any printed reloading book as the truth. They are ruff guide at best. I've been using my 7stw for over 10 years and the slowest powder with 175's is h-1000 or R-25. I spent alot of time on the range and with the chrono.

I agree with budlight I to have about 10 years of experiance with this cartridge. I shoot 82grains of H-1000 in my Sendero with a 160 Accubond and the muzzle velocity is for the most part 3290's but on warmer days I have been over 3300fps. Just work your way up slow every rifle is different. I also shoot 140 Accubonds with 86gr of H-1000 and get around 3400fps. This powder is slow for this light of bullet. I can actually get faster with 80gr of R-22 but with the H-1000 I shoot 2inch groups at 500 yards so I will give the rifle what it likes the most. Even when I am shooting the big 200gr Wildcat I am using 79 of Retumbo and I would only suggest this powder if you are shooting bullets over 180gr.

well the pet load I've been shooting is 86 gr of H-1000 behind a 140 nosler bt, it runs 3552 fps, no pressure signs, the extreme spread is 16 fps, but I get alot of barrel heat from it, this load after 3 shots the barrel is to hot to touch for long. with the wc872 behind the 160 after 7 shots from 90-96 gr the barrel was just warm. Like I said with 94 gr. I was gettin 3232 fps with the 160 with no pressure signs so how do I tell the powder is to slow?

From your first post it sounded like you wanted to get a little more velocity but were running into pressure. Maybe I was reading into it to much. If your rifle likes that powder and you are happy with it then stick with it. Another powder you could try is WMR but if you like what you are shooting stick with it. Good luck with what ever you decide.
