Re: Powder for .223 77gr

I'm with Kevin R15

here is my LR ar load

LC brass
24.0g R15
CCI BR4 primer
70g TSX seated to mag length. It has the same point of impact at 100m as my 55g FMJ load.

Looks like all I can get my hands on are 55gr FMJ. So RL15 still a 'go'?

Got the Hornady 52gr and 55gr, but they were sold out of RL15, but picked up some Benchmark.....gonna run some and see how it works outs.

If anyone has a 'pet' load and wants to PM, I would appreciate. If not, will just refer to manual and start working my way up.

    Gun is a Colt M4.

    thanks,

Ramshot Tac, ASA2520, IMR8208XBR, Varget, RL-15, H4895. Any of these will fit the bill just fine. All of the listed powders are used by many, many High Power service rifle shooters each year including me and my 3 girls.

    Skywalker,

With lighter bullets (like the 55s) Benchmark is an outstanding choice; even better than RL-15 or Varget. These two are better suited to the heavier bullets, like the 77s we mentioned earlier. The lighter ones, like the 55s, will need a faster burning powder. Benchmark is ideal, and used to be one of my standard accuracy powders for testing 224" bullets in the 223 Rem. Meters well, give good velocity and outstanding accuracy.

This goes along with the comments I made earleir from your initial post about 4831. Again, great powder, but just not suited to this role. Put it in a 300 Win Mag and it runs great. In a small capacity case, light bullet type load like this, it's just not the right choice. Gotta match up all the componenets for things to run right.

We use TAC with everything from 53g Vmax to 77g SMK and have had very good results. I've also used Varget, RL15 and Benchmark but keep coming back to TAC since it meters better and shoots just as good for me.
