OCW load results

Okay guys I'm back form the range and I want to see you think.

243 win 85 gr. RL-22

300 win mag 165 gr. GMX RL-22

At targets shot at 100 meters.

243 OCW around 46.3-44.6 grs?

300win mag 77.5 gr and 78.5 were 3 1/2" Right and 1 3/4"High, the 78 gr was 2 1/2" Right and 1 3/4" High avg.

I did not chorny these loads. All shots were round robin. I have never use this method before, I just have always looked for what produce the best group.Any thoughts?

Re: OCW load results

For the 243 try working up a few more steps, looks like you are getting to the ocw.
try 46.5,46.7 and 46.9. you should find the ocw between 46.3 and 51.1 Not sure what the max is though.

Re: OCW load results

Hmmmmm,

MVs would be helpful. Would give indication of velocity overlaps between different powder charges.

Statistically I would venture to say that there is very little difference between the 243's groups. The group where shots 2 & 3 about went into the same hole (46.3 gr) would make one feel good but the odds of it happening are pretty decent out of that many shots where group center hasn't changed much.

If it were me, I'd do another test starting with 46.2 gr, increasing 2 gr until you start getting pressure signs. Using CCI 200s instead of the 250s. And, if at all possible chrono each shot.

The reason I suggest CCI 200s is that I shot 250s for decades in a 270 Win and consistently shot 3/4 MOA average groups. I was suggested that I try the 200s and waalaaa groups shrunk by 50% consistently.

You may not be able to shoot the higher powder charges due to pressure. Just pull those bullets.

Again with the 300 I don't see much difference between the groups.

For the 300 win do seating depth trials with 77.5 until you find the depth that brings the group together.

Re: OCW load results

On the 300 Win Mag.,I did the ladder test on mine and it did not tighten up until I got to 79.5 and 80.0grs of Reloader-22.I had my bullets seated to book specs, which were too deep for my long throated rifle.I seated them out farther to 15 thousands off the lands and repeated the ladder test and got the same results, but tighter groups. At 80.0grs I was getting groups around .50-.75" and 3300fps with a 165gr Hornady.

Re: OCW load results

Thank you guys for the input. I plan on do some more testing with the 243 win starting at 46.3, 46.5, 46.7, and maybe 46.9 grs. and see what happens.

As for the 300 win 78.5 grs as was near max pressure , I was getting flat primers. I think I'm going to load the 78 gr loads and adjust seating depth. the loads 77.5- 78.5 all hit at the same height. I might test more tonight.

Re: OCW load results

Here are sundays test. I did some minor changes.

The 243 loads were change slightly. I seated the bullet in .007" which gave me .032" off the lands, I think the 85 gr sierra likes be closer to the lands. The last loads were .025" off the lands. Looks to me that 46.7grs starts to change, but I'm a little confused with the 46.5 gr. Group B.

The 300 win were all loaded at 78 grs. but looks to be a sweet spot between 2.776"- 2.766". The 2.766" measure .679" group, I think .003-.005" out will tighten the group.

All loads had no more than .002" runout. Let me know what you think.
