New Guy Needs Help on Neck Turning 308/223

I just found this site when I was researching neck turning. What I would like opinions on is how important is neck turning and is it absolutely essential if you are going to shoot in competition? Iíve been heavy into reloading pistol ammo for a long time and although I have all the best equipment for rifle reloading I consider myself a rookie at this stage of the game. Any advice would be appreciated.

I turned 60 this May and I have the urge to do something different as I've been a PPC Competitor for over 30 years and now want to try rifles.

Think of neck-turning as fitting the brass to a tight chamber; perfect clearance. The other benefit is consistent neck wall thickness. Many these days find that they can do as well with excellent brass (Lapua) in a no-turn chamber.

I suggest that you read Glen Zediker's "Reloading for Competition", available from Sinclair. He goes into great depth in explaining brass preparation.

Hey gooddeal

There was a lot of discussion on neck turning this last April and May that had some great information.

This thread was bumped to this year on page 3

To turn or not (necks)

This thread got into the tools

Neck turning and expansion tools

And here was some discussion on benefits

Optimal neck tension for hunting

These will give multiple opinions on your question.

gooddealjunky,

You might look here; Match Prep, Home of the Gracey Power Carrtidge Case Trimmer not cheap but well worth it. I have two, time is important to me.
As for info; Zediker as mentioned is very good, as well as Bryan Litz book; Applied Ballistics For Long Range Shooting; http://appliedballisticsllc.com/inde...s/Articles.htm

Good luck. LEO...
