Need Help! How to size brass for 6.5wsm

Hey guys,

I am looking at building a savage 10 in wsm and making it a 6.5 wsm. I have some experence reloading but not a ton. I was wanting to know how to resize the brass to make it 6.5 wsm? The dies that i have found all say 6.5-300wsm, does that mean that i have to use 300 wsm brass or can I use 270wsm. Seems like 270wsm would work better. Any information on how to do this process would be greatly apprectiated. I would also be interested in books and articles on this process. Thanks for you help.

270 and 300 wsm brass have the same dimensions (except neck diameter obviously) so the 270 would be easier to use. Probably the simplest route to go would be to pick up a set of Redding 270 wsm "S" type bushing dies and switch out the 270 bushing for the size needed to get the desired neck tension on your 6.5 wsm.

agreed, the bushing dies would be the way to go.

would these rcbs dies from midway work RCBS Full Length Sizer Die 6.5mm-300 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) or are they not right. Also, how do i find what size bushing that I need for the reddings to size to the 6.5. Also, am i correct in that the 6.5-300 wsm go/no go gauges are what i need for my barrel swap. Once again thanks for all your help.

I agree here, I use 270WSM brass for my 6.5WSM. An S-Type die is the only way to go IMHO. As far as bushing selection goes, you are between a rock & a hard spot. The best way i've come up with to select the correct bushing size is to have a loaded round to measure (from your own lot of brass/bullet). I can give you some sizes to start with if that'll help, but you may end up buying more than one bushing to get the size just right. Do you plan to neck turn or are you running a no turn chamber? (I am).

Also, I would recommend you buy the FL S-Type die. Meaning full length sizing, bushing style.

Ok outlaw would be great if you could get me close on bushing size. I would like to not have to turn necks if possible. I'm looking at a shilen savage replacement barrel. He has two different chamberings in 6.5wsm and 6.5wsm(.287) I think and not sure what difference is or what one I need.
