loading the 308 with 110 or 125 grain bullets

I have been wondering if anyone has much experience with loading the 308 with either the 110 or 125 grain bullet? I have a 700 Remington Varmint and a Browning A bolt with the heavy barrel and Boss. Both do a good job with the Sierra 150 (2130) bullet but I'd kind of like to take these rifles to Wyoming next year to shoot some pasture poodles.

I'm thinking that you should maybe go the other direction in projectile weight? Those lighter projectiles will have a lower BC value and limit the range you can effectively whack those 'pasture poodles' due to wind drift and drop being exaggerated.

I make some of the finest writing instruments available. My favorite is the Cartridge Pen and closely followed by Fountain/Rollerballs.....

Re: loading the 308 with 110 or 125 grain bullets

I Use the 110 V-MAX (bc .290)
47 Grains of RL 15 (Magical .308 Powder)
Nosler Brass (neck sized after firing in my chamber)
OAL 2.750
Fed 210M primer
Velocity 3060

In the 308 case you can push the 110's to 3200 but those loads are getting a little hot and accuracy suffers. The above load is an accurate load in my rifle and I've shot clay pigeons out to 825 yards with it connecting about 60 percent of the time. Calling the wind is the challenge with this load when I miss its a little left or a little right. I've used 125 NBT's in a 30-06 and accuracy was outstanding but have only shot those to 700 yards. Both rifles have a 1-12 twist.
.308 load
44.5 grains RL-15
175 SMK
Fed 210M
Nosler Case

The 125 Nosler BT is a very accurate bullet but it is not a varmint bullet. It is a game bullet. It really works well on deer as long as you keep your impact velocity under 3100 fps. I use it in my 308 Win rifle to deer hunt with and it is accurate and drops them in their tracks out to right at 300 yards which is as far as I have shot one with this rifle. The 125 Speer TNT is a good varmint bullet as far as it coming apart on impact and accuracy. I use IMR4895 powder to get one hole 100 yards accuracy and top velocity.

Re: loading the 308 with 110 or 125 grain bullets

I recently built a 308 just for the 110 v-max. I have only 8 rounds thru her and they were for velocity testing only with 3 different powders. This gun has a 26" long 1-17 twist so this helps the velocity gain a bit.

Velocity with hornady brass ran as high as 3400 fps without ejector marks with one powder, and in the 3325 fps with 2 other powders. The problem is all the powder types I tested were compressed loads so I will try somthing a little faster burning next round.

I loaded some Speer 125gr. TNT hp.
44.5gr. H4895
CCI 250 primers.
OAL 2.780
that shot just under an inch at 100yds out of my Rem 7400 semi auto.
Going to try them out on some coyotes.

Re: loading the 308 with 110 or 125 grain bullets

I have lots of 308s and never got a 1" group, but I did quick and dirty rebarreling on some surplus Mausers and converted them to 308 and took them to the range Jan 29, 2009.

That day I had (4) different 308s shoot a 1" group at 100 yards.

The load was 110 gr Vmax ~ 3000 fps.

This is a wimp load, but it gets the job done.

All those years of shooting 168 gr Match Kings never got me a 1" group.
