Load Development?

Looking for some good reads on getting started.
I have been loading now for about 6 months and
have done some minor builds on 3 guns.
(Stocks, Beds, Triggers, Upgraded optics.)
I know the steps in loading and some of the finner points
but really do not know how to develop loads.
When and why is it time to switch components ect.
I can't walk out my back door and test a load so
have to load up a few, wait for the weekend to shoot
come home and do it all over again.
Not very productive or cost efficient.
Any articles you may know of would be great.

Re: Load Development?

Dan Newberry's page called Optimal Charge Weight (OCW) is a good read and explains what you're accomplishing when working up a load. There are also good articles on ladder tests all over the place, just ask google.

After running a few tests I have found that the OCW method and the ladder method are actually testing the same thing, however I prefer the OCW because it requires a few more rounds, limiting the effect of opperator error during the testing process.

One more thing, regardless of what caliber you shoot give a read to the new issue of Handloader and check out the .308 Load Developement article. It will offer insight to a great loading process. Although I would be scared to see his receipts for all of the products. Can you say 2nd mortgage?
