Load for 7 WSM

A friend just got a Win model 70 in 7 WSM. He wants me to play with it and find a good load for it. I cant wait. The 7 WSM is kinda what I'm wanting, so I guess I will have an idea of what it will do. He wants 1 bullet for everything, so I'm leaning towards the 162g SST for him. The 160g AB would be my choice, but he is not wanting to pay the price, and its not really a barnburner so I figured the SST will hold up decent for elk/bears, as well as being a good coyote/deer bullet. What should I expect for velocity with the 150's and 160's?? I told him to buy IMR-4350 so thats what we got. I got 120, 140, 150g BTips, 145g and 175g grand slams, and 162g SST's. Anybody got any loads they would like to share for the 7 WSM? Thanks.

Re: Load for 7 WSM

I went through the same procedure with my 7 saum. I would think the same powders would work for both as they are very similar. I use H-1000 with 150 and 160 gr. bullets. I use H-4350 and H-4831 with 140's.I have been using 140 gr. accubonds in mine as an all around bullet because it shoots the best, one ragged hole. That's what I based my criteria on bullet selection on. However if elk and such big game were on my menu, I'd use either the 150 or 160 partition or 160 accubond. Those sst's are pretty frangible in my experience and I would'nt trust them on game bigger than deer. Just my two cents. Also you should get around 2950 to 3000 f.p.s with 160's.

Re: Load for 7 WSM

Hmmm I have H-1000. Might have to try that with the 162g SST's. The 162g SST has a pretty high BC. I shot a bullet into wet newspaper at 50 yards out of my 7 mag at 3000fps and they mushroomed very nicely. If I remember right it was about 65% retention. It did not blow up or seperate the jacket from the core like the .257 117g SST did. I was hoping for 3000fps with the 160's. Like I said, I would use the 160g AB, but hes not much into premium bullets for the price. Thanks.
