Re: IMR 4831 Go to powder for what?

I tried it in the first 7Mag Sendero that I had with 150gn Ballistic Tips and Rem 9.5M primers. I was getting .2's with 64.5gn and again at 66.0gn.
I also have gotten exceptional accuracy (.2's) with two different .243's. I used 90gn Ballistic Tips in the first rifle (Rem 700 Varmint Special) and 85gn Winchester HP's in the second rifle (Win 70 HVB). Both rifles liked 44.5gn of IMR 4831 and CCI BR2's.
I wish I had 7.5lbs of it! JohnnyK.

Throw the dang'd stuff away. Back in the "day", all the manuals said 60 gr of 4831 and the 130 gr Sierra was good for the magic 3000 fps plus. It did shoot pretty well, hung around .75 MOA for and harvested may mule deer.

Then I bought the Oehler chrony, the first one with the paper screens. My favorite load was going a bit over 2800 fps. The finding resulted in a major depression.

Since then 4831 and I have had an estranged relation ship. Maybe in one of the larger calibers with a heavy bullet and a case large enough to to hold some powder. I've tried 4831 in a 338 Win and 338 RUM with less than impressive results. 7828ssc seems to out do it in the cartridges I've tried.

Oh, and after thought, don't use light loads of 4831 in anything like a 22-243. The/a secondary/reflected pressure wave makes things come apart. Makes your hand tingle as pieces are spread around the firing line. Was there once as a witness.

IMR 4831 is faster than H4831, and is a completely different powder.

That 60gr/4831/130gr bullet/ .270WCF load was Jack O'Connor's famous recipe based on surplus WWII 20mm Oerlikon H4831

Today's H4831 is much the same, except you can't buy it in paper bags for a few cents/lb anymore.

IMR 4931 is a really great powder in many, many cartridges. Some that I have had extensive experience with is 6mm Rem., .243, 30:06, .270 win., and 7mm Rem. Mag. I would certainly questiion my .270 rifle if I could not find a good load with IMR 4831.

I achieved consistent 3/4" average 100 yd groups, 5 shots, for years. The low velocity bugged me.......... I believe 60 grains of either of the 4831 loads was a compressed load.

The 300 Win Mag! I been using 71.0gr of IMR 4831 under a 190gr SMK seated .005 off the lands in a Savage 112 HB for years. ( Primer = Fed 215M ) It's consistent and accurate. I'm proud to say I have shot several 1 hole groups ( 3 shots ) with it. Velocity is just under 2800 fps.
