Hornady new runout gauge??

Has anyone used or have any oponions on Hornady's new lock n load Concentricity Tool. Its supposed to measure runout and then adjust it. Just curious if you guys think it works/ is worth trying.

For checking run out it works great. For correcting run out I think it is a waste of time. It is a great idea that someone should be able to improve on.

Re: Hornady new runout gauge??

I have acquired one while putting together my reloading setup. I've used it to determine runout on factory loaded ammo as a test and it seems to work as advertised. Correcting the excess runout takes some trial and error to get the feel, but you will notice the change on the dial indicator when you get it right. As you might imagine, small runout errors are difficult to ascertain, but major ones can be seen with the naked eye. I see it as simply one more tool to help in determining whether one has the concentricity as near straight as they can get it. Subtle differences often only produce subtle results. YMMV

Looks like a good idea, I've been trying to get one for a while. With the Hornady dies tho, they say runout isn't that big of an issue anyway. I guess it depends what dies you are using. The Hornadys' have a "floating" bullet seater.

I am certainly no reloading guru, but from everything I have determined, the quality and accuracy of the final product is directly tied to the quality and accuracy of the equipment and reloader that builds it. I think one of the more critical parts is the bullet seating die. As newer designs in bullets come available, VLD's, etc, one must pay attention to the mate up between the bullet seating die and the meplat of the bullets used. If the die doesn't contact the ogive as opposed to the meplat, you are almost guaranteed to have bullet runout issues. Will you notice it at 100 to 200 yards? Perhaps not, but I'd put money on it that it would have a measurable effect at 1000 yards plus. As always. I could be wrong and your milage may vary.

nfhjr62, you should call me at Grafs. We have plenty of them in stock. We sell them for 94.99 and shipping is only 6.95 for phone orders and 4.50 for order on the website. I can get you set up with one. I work in Tech support. -Jake-
