H4895

I just found 20 lbs. Keg of h4895 that has never been open. After opening the color is normal ( black ). But no smell. I loaded 4 rounds in my 06 at 48 gr with 150 bullet all went bang and brass look good. Thought on the power?

When I first began loading I used 52gr 4895 in a 06 and a 150gr Hornady Spire Point. Used that load for years and wacked a lot of bucks. Last time I looked the load might be a little hot but that load was in a old Lyman Reloading Manuel.

Shoot over a chronograph and see how it performs. It's a good powder in the 06 with light bullets...quite accurate.

As long as it doesn't have an acidic smell it should be fine. As stated above, shoot it over a chrony. As long as you're getting consistent velocity and not getting hangfires or duds I'd use it.

Yep, should be good. If it's getting green and crusty with an acidic odor it'll be bad, but until then shoot the crap out of it and burn it up.

Re: H4895

I was able today to shoot today using 40 year 4894 power three shots at 200 yards at 1inch. Was able to talk to hodgen power today, was told the power was good until it change color or smell got bad. Have not had a chance to use it in my 223. Will tomorrow. Thanks for the reply.
