Re: h-380

I beleive the powder's "dirtyness" has to do with how efficient it is in a particular case. I keep a little on hand and have used it in a 30-06 300wsm and 22-250. I had the best results in the 22-250 but it isn't my favorite powder in my rifles. Some people have excellent luck with it. It was primarily used in the 22-250 and was vary popular.

Re: h-380

I have literally burned pounds of H-380. In certain applications it is my go to powder. I have a 220 swift that thrives on it. I also have a 25-06 that begs to be fed a steady diet. I probably have ten pounds in storage now if I looked. The previous post was spot on in that if the charge isn't fully burnt it will appear dirty. In my loads other than the distinct smell of H-380 in the air, it is totally consumed before it hits the end of the barrel.

Re: h-380

bull,
I have read that it was developed by Bruce Hodgdon for the .22-250Rem. He used 38.0 (380) gns behind, either a 50 or 55 gn bullet. Not sure of the bullet weight, but that was the powder charge.
I tried it in the couple of .22-250's that I have owned and it never outperformed IMR and H4895. I also tried it in a friends .300WSM (Nosler) in an attempt to find the best grouping load. I have some on hand but don't reach for it very often. JohnnyK.
