Fireforming .270 AIs ...

I am very excited as I am expecting delivery of my .270 AI (my very first and only wildcat - noob ) any day now and was wondering if you guys can share your experiences. I will be taking advantage of the 165/175 Matrix VLD bullets off 3-gr, 1:8, 30" barrel from Lilja.

My plan was to use .270 Win Winchester brass with close to max loads from .270 win data and refine it for .270 AI once fireformed.

Please advise if there's a better way (not interested on saving powder method ) or better brass to use. Also, if you have a preferred dies.

Thank you in advance for your patience, support, and understanding.

V/R

Norma makes good 270win brass, anneal first if possible. Seat the bullets slightly in the lands for better control and use a charge about 2grns under max. Cheapest way to do the dies is to get a 30-06ai fl die to bump the shoulder, a 27 cal hornady neck die, and a 270wby mag seater die, assuming you already have a standard 270win 2 die set.

I don't know norma brass in the 270, but rem is pretty good too. It has worked well for me for fireforming in the stw. I'd say to stay away from win brass, but it has the most volume, and the only thing wrong is the primer pockets are very shallow and may need reaming deeper. Why the ai and not the wby or wsm?? The die jumps sound right. Have fun, the 270 is a good one.

Wasn't paying full attention when you said you want to use winchester brand brass, with it annealing is a must, and you will likely still split a 1/3 of the case necks, its simply to hard for good fireforming.

backwoods83, - Yes, I already have a .270 Win dies (Hornady - zip spindle)

Lefty7mmstw, - The reason for the Winchester case is this article >>> 270 Win For Long Range Shooting . As far as "Why the ai and not the wby or wsm?? ", ... simply because it's my first AI ;) ...

Taking notes ... please keep them coming.

I'm sure your aware, if not id get some H1000, RE25, mag pro, and retumbo. I'm betting in the AI a compressed load of Retumbo lit with 215Ms will be the ticket.

Hey FEENIX, that 270AI sounds cool! It's one you don't here too much about. It aught to be about perfect for coming off of your shoulder surgery!

What are your expected velocitys?
How does the AI stack up to the WSM with bullets in the, say, 140-ish weight class?
Where does the 270 AI land in regards to the 270Win, 270WSM, & 270Wby, & 270 AM?
I'm excited for you, & can't wait to see/here how it turns out. It sounds freakin Awesome! Congrats on your new toy bud. Sorry I didn't have anything usefull to contribute to your thread, & only had questions, but you got my curiosity up for sure.

Have you considered Nosler brass as a backup incase you don't like ww?
