What best accuracy bullet would you consider best for ranges aroun 500 yards for the 300 W?

Re: Bullet for 308W

If you are staying within 500 yards, the 175 SMK or 178 AMAX will probably be best. If you want to stretch the range a little more, 190 SMKs start to take over. If you want to spend a little more cash, you can try the 175, 185 or 190 gr Berger VLDs. They have all been shooting very well for me with my limited experience with them.

Currently I am shooting the following loads:

Nosler brass
81 gr H1000 175 Berger VLDs RP9.5M; COL 3.660"
69 gr IMR 4350 190 SMK GM210M @2921 fps
74 gr RL 22 190 Berger VLD RP9.5M @2957 fps; COL 3.665"

Every one of those loads shoot lights out for me. I have not chrono'd the H1000 load as the chrono was acting up when those were fired. I would suspect they are chugging along at about 2975 fps. That is not close to max load. The other two are max or near max in my rifle. With Remington 300WM brass, I was able to go to 78 gr RL22 with the VLDs and no pressure @3120 fps, but the groups were opening up. Nosler brass is much thicker than the RP, Federal, Hornady and WW 300WM brass I have shot. I had to back down and work back up each load.

Re: Bullet for 308W

Did you mean 308 Win or 300 WM? You have confusing abbreviations in title and post.

I concur with Varmicide. J4 168s gave Gonehuntingagain and I a 490 yard one shot kill each at a rockchuck hunt last spring.

Re: Bullet for 308W

You might want to see how the Nosler 180 grain Ballistic Tip does for you. It's got a thick enough jacket for good penetration, around a .500 BC, and is pretty accurate. I've not checked it on paper much beyond 300 yards, but it looked good at 315 yards as shown below... 44.2 grains of Varget and CCI 200's in Win brass. From my Savage LE2B's 26" barrel, this load makes around 2750 fps--which is faster than I expected it to be.
