Best long range target load for .308win

So my fiance just purchased me an M700 SPS Varmint LH chambered for .308 win for Christmas. I already have a Bobby Hart Long range target laminate stock from stocky's on order along with an EGW 20moa 1-piece base, and Rifle Basix Trigger. In 10 days when i can pick the rifle up (CA sucks) all of it will be dropped off at my smiths to be bedded and installed. My question is this: As this gun will be used purely as a trainer for long range shooting, what will best the be combination of high BC bullets and what powder to get me the longest supersonic range out of the .308. It is a 12 twist 26" bbl. My 4x16x44 Nikon monarch will get transplanted to this rifle from my .300 ultra until the Viper PST are released then both rifles will get one. Thanks!

    175 SMK
    44 GR Varget
    Win Brass
    Fed210M Primer
    Seated 2.800

OR buy Federal Gold Metal Match 175's

Do not bother 168's they do not do well at a 1000

155 will work if you push them 2950+.

Right on the money. My load is:

    175gr Berger VLD
    Lapua Brass
    CCI BR2 primer
    44.5gr Varget
    2.900 OAL

    Sub MOA at 1K.

What kind of velocities are you guys seeing with these loads, and in what length barrels?

You might want to see if you can get away with the 210 Berger/SMK, or 208 AMAX. There is a fellow over on Sniper's hide that has done this successfully in a 12 twist factory Remington. Any of those bullets in conjunction with a stiff charge RL17 will make any other bullet seem anemic by comparison.

I shoot them around 2650 fps from a 24" barreled .308. I will only continue to buy 30 cal heavies and shoot them from the .308, .30-'06, and 300 RUM. I have 10 twist and one 11.25 twist barrel, and they shoot just fine.

Both myself and Montana Marine on Sniper's hide both live at elevation though. That may have something to do with it being stable.

I could not get the 208's to shoot in my 700p(1 in 12) but I have had great luck with the following..

    180 Accubond
    Lapua Brass
47.2g R-17(this is heavy but no pressure problems at all)
    CCI BR2 Primer
    2625 FPS

    With the load above:
    Started with a PSS 26" 2710 FPS
Cut to 21" and it was 2550FPS
This load in both barrels got me to steel at 1250 yrds(not easily but hit steel) Very accurate at 900yrds, 1000 is doable, but not easy with a 308. ITs amazing how hard that last 100 yrds makes it.

    Now have a 27" 1-11 twist
    Shooting 155 Nosler CC
    45.5 Gr RL 15 2950FPS

24" barrel, Factor HOWA gets 2650 FPS with the 175 load.
