Berger 308 Win bullet ?

Which weight and design for targets out to 1000? Of course finding some in these times may be a chore but what the heck gotta start somewhere. I was thinking the 168 or 175? will the 168 make it to 1200?

If your using a .308, I highly suggest the Berger 168 hybrid. Works phenomenally in my short barrel. I use that bullet exclusively now. It has a higher BC than most of the 175 grain bullets. Worked good on my deer I shot this year also.

Re: Berger 308 Win bullet ?

I agree with liltank that is what i used to load but it got expensive, I switched to 175 SMKs and I have not loked back. They shoot good out to a grand but if you want to shoot past 1000 you might want to look @ a different caliber. I have 2 308 and I love them but I also have a 6.5-284 if I want to strech things out. I found that no matter what I did in a 5 shot group with the Bergers I would always have one flyer still shot under .5 all day long, can't go wrong with either the Hybrids or 175 SMK.

Re: Berger 308 Win bullet ?

I have a 300wm that will do the 1200. I want to try it with the 308win just cuz most of the guys there are doing it with 1/2 lb of powder out of a 50cal. maybe it's the idea of doing it the hard way.
I guess I will see which ones I can get hold of. The 175 Berger has a pretty high bc also.

Re: Berger 308 Win bullet ?

I just read an article about shooting .308 with 168gr bullets at long range. What the writer found in their case was the 168 bullet became subsonic and was key holing the target. You didn't mention the twist rate of your rifle, but it would help if it's 1:10 to shoot 1k or longer. I'd also look at bullets in the 185 to 210gr to get you where you want to be.

Good luck with this and let us know how it turned out.

What the writer is referring too is the 168 SMK and bullets of similar design. They are built with a Tangent ogive which struggles to maintain stability through the transonic period. The VLD and Hybrid style bullets can maintain stability through the transonic transission keeping them accurate to a better degree. They use a Secant ogive, and the Hybrid is a combination of the two ogives. I didn't have any problem with the Hybrid and my cousin did quite well with the 168 A-max.

I have a 26 inch 10 twist barrel. It has done the Sierra 155 fine to 750. But they wont go to 1k and I would like to see how well it will do at 1k
