I found this in my notes

Old 7mmSTW loads

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You know I was looking thru my old copies of Handloader. I came across the No. 174 April 1995 edition. It has some 7mmSTW loads wrote by Layne Simpson. Wow, there was some speeders in there. Let me point out a few.

140gr Sierra SBT, H4831, 78gr-81gr, 3348-3417fps (decently reasonable)
140gr Nosler BT, RL22, 78-80gr, 3404-3463fps (about right with current data)
140gr Nosler BT, H1000, 86-88gr, 3373-3516fps (getting hot in here)
140gr Nosler Partition, 7828, 80-83gr, 3407-3498fps (even hotter)
160gr Speer GS, RL22, 76-77gr, 3165-3219fps
160gr Speer GS, H1000, 80-85gr, 3149-3319fps (smokin)
160gr Partition, H5010, 87-90gr, 3182-3311fps, (wow)

A-Square factory loads in 26.5" Custom 700, Schnieder barrel, wow, look at these speeds.
140gr Nosler BT, 3512fps
160gr Partition, 3315fps
160gr Sierra SBT, 3303

The two loads I've really fooled with are as follows though they may be hot in your rifles, they are at least 2 grains below any kind of pressure signs in my 26"/#5/1-9 lilja barreled bansner custom UR-1. They both utilize once fired remington 8mm rem brass necked to 7mm with a standard FL sizer and fed. 215's as primers. The 140's averaged .4" at 100 yds, and the 160's stayed about the same
86 gr of H-1000 behind a 140 nosler ballistic tip/ 3552 fps
94 gr. of WC 872 behind a 160 nosler accubond/ 3340 fps
velocities taken 15' from the muzzle

I can't post my loads yet because I can not get a consistant load without a sticky bolt. I may need to neck turn my cases, neck on gun may be on the tight side. I am working on loads with 150 grn SMK, 168grn SMK and 140 grn Acubond, based on the other post I may move up to a 160 grn Acubond. I am also going to try some berger bullets as soon as I get a reliable load with what I have.

The powders I am using at the moment are IMR 7828 and H-1000 with CCI magnum powders. I may try my loads with regular primers to see if that helps.

I think one of my bigger problems is the heat here in Houston. On my load testing so far, temps have been mid 80's to upper 90's. When it gets to upper 90's, my sticky bolt problem is more pronounced.

Well heres to another weekend of burning powder.

HR, what cases ya using? you may try annealing them. my STW with standard rem 8mm cases doesn't have a heavy bolt lift with H-1000/140/fed 215's till you hit 88 gr.

I have both Remington that were originally factory loaded and Winchester cases factory sized. I shoot a Savage 112 FVSS with a factory varmint taper 26" stainless barrel.

I thought that I might need to anneal the necks and plan to this weekend before i load the next batch. I did have some that after two rounds of firing that i needed to trim but the trimmed cases still had a sticky bolt. The bolt has an easy lift it just is hard to pull the bolt back. I take my knife or what ever is handy and tap the bolt backward to eject the shell. The problem is that on some really hot loads i have a normal ejection of the case.

On another forum there is a tag line of a group of guys that shoot 45/70's.

They call them self the band of bubbas. I put the tag line on my signature on this and other forums because I think there should be a club of 7mm STW owners. It is a unique cartridge and the owners I think would have similar taste and goals. If i had time I would even start a web site based on this cartridge, for like minded pepole to share information and stories.

As I suppose I am the founding member of the new organization the only requirement is to own a 7MM STW. If you would care to join and have a 7 MM STW then by all means put the title into your tag line. Welcome to the club.
