338 RUM question??

I started plugging numbers once again for an LR elk/bear rifle. My initial plan was to just keep my 300 RUM, but go with a 28" or 30" barrel. I was also now thinking of the 338 RUM and shooting the 300g SMK. What could I expect for velocity wise with say a 28" or 30" barrel shooting the 300g SMK. The ballistics aren't bad even for say 2700fps, but I would really like to push it to 2800fps to really see any big advantage, then going over the 300 RUM and the 240g SMK at 3000.

Re: 338 RUM question??

Rem,

Have you seen some of my old posts about the 338/300RUM, in a year or two I am planning on having Kirby build me this rifle throated to shoot the 300gr wildcats ULD RBBT with a 28" bbl.

By necking up the 300 RUM case you get .010 longer body and match or exceed the capacity of the 338 Lapua.

Should be hell on wheels for elk and bear.

Good Luck

Re: 338 RUM question??

No, I have not seen any of the posts. Do you know what your expected velocity would be out of the 300/338 Ultra? I may just go that route. The 300 RUM case is a tad bit larger then the 338 I guess, is'nt it. I never really thought of doing that. If I could just get 2800 or even 2850 or 2900fps, I would definately go with the 338 and 300g bullets. If not, I'll probly settle with the 300 and the 225g uld or the 240g smk. I'll be making a lot more money when I get in the ARMY, so I'm really gonna be thinking of what rifle I want Kirby to build me. I'm just a numbers guy and always looking for something better, always plugging numbers.

Re: 338 RUM question??

remingtonman_25_06,

I have a 338 RUM and love it. My longest shot was on an Elk at 350 yds w/ 210 gr PT. It was a bang flop kill. I can't speak to actual LRH but it is truely a hammer.
The 338/300RUM is also known ase the 338 Edge. The case is .1" longer than the 338 RUM which will give you extra case capacity. The 338 RUM can push a 250 gr bullet close to 3000 fps and the 338 Edge is something like 3050 fps.
Do a search on the 338 Edge and I know there is some good data available.
Think of the cartridge case as an engine and "There is No Replacement for Displacement"! The .338 will hit a lot harder than the .308. Only downside is recoil but there are ways around it IF it bothers you.
Hope this helps you out.

Regards,

JD338

Re: 338 RUM question??

I think it will either be the same or very similiar to the 338 EDGE. Looks like 3000fps is possible attainable with the 300gr SMK.

Should pack a hell of a punch, excpecially with the 300gr ULD's.

take it easy and have fun in the Army

Re: 338 RUM question??

OK. I'm familiar with the 338 EDGE. Just did not know the velocitys. If 3000 is achievable with the 300g, with a longer tube, I think I made up my mind!! 2900fps should be easily attainable then. That makes for a lot of POWER. Shawn Carlock seems to build quite a few of these. I might have to chat with him about it and get some numbers.

Re: 338 RUM question??

I am not sure what the diff between his 338 EDGE and the 338/300 RUM is, may not be anything. I dont know if you would be ahead to increase the shoulder angle or anything, should be a real power house.
