338 lapua help

I got my lapua a few weeks ago and so far I'm not real happy. I did the whole break in procedure and have started shooting groups. I found H-1000 with 71g gives me a very small spread so I tried several different seating depths and my average group is about 2.5-3 inches at 200 yards. I have tried other powders as well but so far nothing good at all. I am shooting the Berger 300g and keeping them under 2875 so I don't think the bullet is the problem. If anyone can give me some advice to help me out then please do. Thanks

By the end of the read I was think the exact same thing. That velocity seems a bit high too. My 338 LM with 91.5 gr is at 2785 mv. The seating depth I am using is .015 off the lands, but it shot well in other places too. What scope?

I apologize for it being hard to read I had been up for 23 hours and only had about 2.5 hours before that, anyway enough excuses. The gun is a custom built on a CZ 550 Safari Classic action with a 30.5 inch 10 twist Krieger barrel. The stock is a CZ fully aluminum bedded. Now the scope I admit is not the best scope but I have owned 4 of them and I really like them (still have 3,traded the other one with a It is a Osprey International 10-40x50. No need to preach to me about the scope like I said I have had several of them and had great success with them. That being said as soon as I finish writing this I am going to take it off and put a leupold that I have on and see if that makes any difference. Thanks for the replys and I'll let you know how it does with the other scope on it

Sometimes a rifle just does not like a certain bullet no matter how good it is or how bad
we want to use it .

If you are getting good SDs and poor groups chances are that your barrel does not like
the bullet you want to use.

Try another bullet of the same weight and if it doesn't change much, Go to a different
bullet weight. Barrel harmonics have a great deal to do with accuracy and bullets of
different bullets will effect the harmonics.

It could also be the bedding.

    Just a guess.

well turns out not as easy of a task as i thought. I tried to take the screws out of the rings to take the Leupold off and i cant get them off. Almost twisted off both ends of my allen wrench. Anybody got any suggestions on how to get them out?

How much have you played with the seating depth? Bergers have always given me the hardest time to load accurately for! Finally got my 7wsm to shoot unbelievably but even while reloading i have to check every single load with a comparator to make certain the lengths are just perfect! My 7wsm with the 168 vld likes them 0.006 into the lands. if they are off by .004 i will be looking at a 4 inch group. I have even loaded up about 20 of them and they were a bit too long to fit in my plastic box (by just a few thous) so i kinda gave the lid a slight nudge to get it closed and sure enough those 20 shot like junk because a few had been pushed in a bit farther. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions
