Which 308 bullets?

I just ordered a savage FCP-K .308 for some fun long range shooting. For starting out I plan on shooting between 100 and 600 yds.
I also reload and was wondering what would be a good bullet (brand/type) that won't break the bank for practice shooting(mainly steel plates).
At this point I'm not worried about competition accuracy, I want to focus on shooting fundamentals.

Thanks
DD

Try the Hornady A-Max bullets either the 168 or 178 grain. Also the standard it the 175 grain Sierra Matchkings with Varget.

Re: Which 308 bullets?

I like 168 grainers for the 308. Most of these target versions of these are fairly reasonable for price. I think Sierra's are about $30/100 and Hornady's are $27/100. The hard part will be finding them.

Enjoy your new toy!

Re: Which 308 bullets?

My 700 5R loves the Nosler Custom Competition 168 & 175 grainers, with 44.0gr of Varget behind them, Lapua brass, and Federal 210 primers. It likes them set out at 2.810" at 100 yards, but I have also yet to try them pushed out beyond SAAMI spec.

Anyone with a 700 5R shooting 168's and 175's know if their gun likes them up against the lands or 0.010" or 0.001" off or what?
