300wm/300rum which do you have and why?
just wondering which caliber you have and the reasons for picking it. i have had several 300wm's i am familar with this caliber. it will shoot to 1000 yards with accuracy and energy to take deer. and elk to 800 yards. i mainly long range for deer so it suits my needs. i have had opertunity for 300 rum. but it burns 20 grains more powder,is harder on the throat, and i alredy have a 300wm. whats your story?

I've never shot a 300 WM, so my opinion is a little one sided. Never shot a 300 RUM either, but I just got one.
I think the WM is a good cartridge based on what I know about it, and theonly thing I dont like aboput it is the belted cases. Some say that's no big deal and they are probably right, but why have them? I just dont like them.
The 300 RUM moves a bullet about 300 fps faster than a WM, and in long range shooting, that means longer range shots and hunting reach. The increased velocity also provides a flatter trajectory for less gues work at short to medium ranges and less windage issues.
I think that pretty much sums it up for me.

300 WM for me. Brass life and better brass available. Much longer and more consistant barrel life. 300 wm has a proven track record and will take deer to 1000 and do a good job. If I need to do farther I will use my .338 Lapua.
Thats my opinion.

I am using a 300 RUM currently. I picked it because it looked impressive on paper and it is. How ever, I am moving to the 300WSM. "My story" can be found here ------> 300 RUM barrel life. The whole documantation. After reading this, you will know why I am moving to the 300WSM. After developing all the different loads and testing them at distance etc....Its time for a new barrel. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. This is a shame on me instance.

Thanks for this post I have been debating the same thing and it seams to me the 300 RUM just isent worth it for the volume I shoot.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The volume one shoots. Some guys only shoot their hunting rifles a few times a year and thats it. Others are at the range weekly and some several times a week. A barrel burner isnt the choice for a powder adict.

Well, I'm old. And a hunter. If I can't hit it and kill it with a 30-06 from where I am I just get a little closer. Never felt a need for any "magnums" other than the .22 RF mag or .17 HMR. Guess that's no help to you tho. ??
