Re: 300 Weatherby 180 grain at 3200 plus

I'm using H1000 and getting an average velocity of 3250fps with 180 Accubond. The accuracy at all distances is amazing however I have had serious problems with the bullet and believe that it does not hold together well. It has worked great on several white tail and mule deer, however only once have I had an exit wound and I have never retrieved any portion of the bullet, complete fragmentation. I will be changing the bullet but keeping the H1000.

DO NOT set a goal of 3400fps for your 300 wby and a 180 grain bullet. Having loaded for a quite a few I can tell you that any normal factory 300 wby that goes over 3300 fps with a 180 in a 26" barrel is treading on high pressure. I guess there is always the "1 in a million" gun that does the phenominal but I think MM owns it.

Re: 300 Weatherby 180 grain at 3200 plus

I have built loaded and shot many 300 wby's for 35 years and I have seen one go over 3400 fps and I own it. 86 grains of 7828 is a very accurate load in most rifles and will get you well over 3200 fps. RE25 is another good powder. The ones you listed are good powders just not best for going over 3200 accurately in this cartridge. 82 grains of H-4831 is my all time favorite accuracy load for the 300 wby. It will get you just over 3200 fps in most rifles. 7828 will get you there with less pressure and good accuracy.

Kraky,
I have pressure testing equipment, and I can tell you that even factory loadings with 180gr bullets at 3250fps are on the low side, contrary to what most say about Weatherby factory loads being HOT!
The difference is in how they're measured, SAAMI and CIP measure differently, and my testing has shown that you can get above 3400fps with the 300Wby depending on the powder used!

I do not advocate doing so without pressure testing equipment, that is why I didn't put up the load data, just stating that this cartridge is perfectly capable of such speeds!

The same as the 270Wby I own, it can get 3500fps with 130gr bullets, as does factory ammo, but if you look at any US data, it's a pipe dream according to them!

Re: 300 Weatherby 180 grain at 3200 plus

Most any 270 wby with a 26" or longer barrel will push a 130 grain bullet over 3500 fps. But that is pretty incredible velocity in a 300 wby. I have chronographed one rifle in 40 years that would go over 3400 fps with a 180. My 300 ultramags only get 3450 fps with max loads in 28" barrels.

I'm getting 3500 with 110 AB out of my 25-06... 3400 with a 115 Ballistic Silvertip.
