Re: 300 WBY velocity ???

To get the most from the 300 WBY u need a 26" barrel

Here is my load in my MK5 WBY 300 with 26"

IMR 7828 @ 85.0
180 Sierra Pro Hunter
CCI 250 Mag Primer
Hornady Brass
3290 FPS

86.0 gave 3300+ FPS but better groups at 85.0

Re: 300 WBY velocity ???

My experience is with a .300 Weatherby in a 1929 Model 70 that was originally a .300 H&H but was reamed to .300 Weatherby.

I liked Reloader 22 and 200 gr Accubonds to 3030 fps (26 inch barrel) with F215 primers for elk.

My 10 twist barrel shot better with 200gr than it did with any 180 that I tried. I could get an inch and half at 100 yards with a straight 6X Redfield. Lots of recoil. Strategically place sandbags. I took one hero to the hospital from the range with an eye damaged with a Mark V in .300 Weatherby. Even worse with a short barrel.

Re: 300 WBY velocity ???

its a rare 300win mag that will do 3100 with a 180 using safe pressures. More like 2900 to maybe 3000. I have a vaguard with a 24 inch barrel and a mark v with a 26. Using the same loads there about 75 fps different. Maybe i have a fast 24 inch barrel or a slow 26 but i know that no animal is going to know the differnce in which one of those guns shot them. If i were you and truely got 1/2 groups id put the dies back on the shelf and go hunting.

180 gr factory loads for a 300 WSM range from 2950 - 3000 which I have confirmed over a chrono. No doubt the average 300 WM is going to be about 100 fps faster. A few years back I was at the range shooting 180's over RL17 in my 300 WSM and chrono was showing them about 3196 fps average. A guy next to me had a 300 WM and asked me if I would shoot his rilfe over my chrono so he could get an idea of his loads velocity. He was shooting 180's over RL22 or RL25, cant remember which but it was one of those. I shot two rounds which averaged almost exactly what my load averaged. No pressure signs from either rifle other than some somewhat flattened primers. I had a 24 3/8ths barrel and he had a 26" barrel.

Re: 300 WBY velocity ???

The 300 WBY at 3150 FPS with 180's is the factory load that was reduced many years ago by the manufactories. My 1965 German/ JP Sauer made WBY ,has since been rebarrel by WBY a few years ago. Norma MRP is what I used back in the 70's but then was hard to get, went to H4831 for many years then IMR let the public have IMR 7828 some 15 years ago and that's been the only powder I have used since.

I suggest get a old Speer Manual that dates back to mid 60's and you get some realistic vel numbers for handloads.

The 300 WBY with 180's in the 26" can safely get 3300 FPS with IMR 7828 @ 86.0 with the right combination of brass and primers.

Back in the 60's the powder of choice was IMR 4350 for the 300 WBY with the 180's loaded to 3300 FPS the pressures PSI should have been very high at that levels.......almost in danger zone! IMR 4350 still a good powder for the 300 WBY as referenced in old Speer Manual.

The 300 Win a great cartridge have one, a Rem 700 5R tact , I shoot H1000 @ 3000 FPS with 180's.

The 300 WSM a very efficient cart........especially with RL 17 and good accuracy.

When you get a 300 Weatherby up to its Potential it's a very flat shooting round.....if I remember a 15" drop at 500 yards with a 4" zero at 100 yards.

Like to fine a Win 70 Pre 64 in 300 HH that's not wore out?
