300 WBY velocity ???

So I got this vanguard in 300 WBY with only 24" tube. Realizing this is going to have some effect on velocity.

Anyways, I have pretty much settled on 81g RL-22 w/180g NBT's. Its shooting .5" at 100 yards for 3 shots. Only thing is this, VELOCITY. On my cronograph, I"m only averaging 3075fps. Now I'm no rocket scientist, but this is only 300 Win Mag velocity. I see Factory 180's in 300 wby are loaded to 3250fps in 26" tube. 2" barrel dont make up for 175fps. Should I just live with the fact there only doing 3075fps and .5", or try and find a different load with a little more velocity??

BTW, IMR-7828 was giving me 3150-3250fps but accuracy sucked with 180g SST's. Never did try NBT's w/7828. Maybe I should give that a quick try?

Since I was getting 3150-3250fps, I know the rifle is surely capable of producing the appropriate velocity.

Should I switch powders or just stick with what I got?

I would keep the accuracy and not worry about the velocity. If you had not cronographed that load you would be very happy with it. Just work up your drop chart using 3075 fps and be happy with .5MOA

Try the Nosler Accubonds and IMR 7828. I bet it will group them well and on top of that, you'll get the velocity you're hoping for.

My recommendation is based on mostly poor luck with Hornady bullets, and mostly good results with Nosler BTs and Accubonds.

If you're getting close to 3100 fps with a 180 gr. bullet AND 1/2 MOA accuracy you should be very happy.

I used to have a load for my .300 Wby Sako using H1000 that shot 165 gr. SST's into tiny little groups with regularity. Velocity was only running around 3050 fps, but it was so accurate I knew I could always count on it to shoot where I wanted it to.

i had a 300 wby benchrest rifle with a 29"hart barrell..950 at muzzle,i shot 200 smk's at 3250 fps in dead of winter without pressure signs.great velocity!but shot 4"groups at 300 yards.not quite what i was looking for.78 grains of rl 22/ 200smk=1.5"groups at 300 yards=3000 fps.not as good as 3250,but i'll take the accuracy over the speed anyday.

Try the Noslers. You might as well have the speed along with the accuracy.

A novel concept I know...but add powder!
