30-06 load

I'm just finishing up a savage build in 30-06, barrel is a 1-11 twist 28" long. Question I have is with this twist rate and length can I reasonably expect to shoot 200-215 grain bullets at an acceptable velocity and be stabilized , or should I start load development around the 180 grain class. I know that there's no way better to find out than to try it but I'm just wondering if any of you have had reasonable luck w 30-06 and heavy bullets. Thanks.

Re: 30-06 load

You shouldn't have a problem with 210gr bullets. Depends on what you want to do. 190's are a good middle weight bullet.

Re: 30-06 load

I'm hoping to get to 1000-1200 yards with the 06, and any load data would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 30-06 load

185 or 190 VLD in the .06. I would not go heavier. The heavier bullets lose their luster pretty quick even though you have a 28" tube. Just my opinion. Try pushing the bullet with Reloder 22 and start with a magnum primer and watch the magic.

Let us know what you do.

WHAT barrel?

Barrel is a mcgowen stainless in a heavy sporter w muzzle brake. Only have used factory barrels or shilen so I hope it works out. Customer service wise my dealings w mcgowen was top notch.

Re: 30-06 load

A few years back I replace a barrel on my 30/06, 26 inch barrel and 1 in12 twist.
The gunsmith told me that because I wanted to shoot lighter bullets, a 1 in 12 would work with 110s to 165s no problem.
To me it sounds like a 1 in 11 might not be the cat's arse for a heavy bullet!
