Re: 280AI question

Here is the link: 280 Ackley Improved Alert | GunsmithTalk

At this time it looks like buying Norma 280 brass and fire forming it may be the best option. My smith said he could fire form some Lapua 30-06 brass for me. However, fire forming Norma brass would probably work just as good. ???

Re: 280AI question

It must have been a recent change because new brass I used was probably bought in 2008. Measuring using a barrel stub made with my reamer to very closely approximate mid point of the shoulder, they are GTG.

I was using a member of this forums brass for the fired cases and his rifle to test fire the new cases. I am not sure when his brass was purchased maybe he will speak up, I know he is aware of this thread.

All of his once fired cases were very close in length using the method I used to measured them. I would expect some variances being that none of those once fired cases had bullets jammed into the lands to help hold the case heads against the boltface.

I originally thought that I had a newer reamer and go gauge, but checked and my reamer is older. My gauge is newer. I cannot recall what my gauge states for dimensions but it is a .280 gauge -004. Unless the gauge manufacturer made some changes to the gauges to reflect the differnces I think nosler brass is okay to use. I will state that is only a sampling of one. I checked a few cases from my personal .280 AI and all of my cases were .003 than the other rifle.

I did have a very hard time chambering remington 280 brass in the gun I was using to test the cases. My conclusin is this either none of the 280 AI nosler brass I have around is affected, or Dave Kiff changed the 280 - .004 gauges to reflect the saami specs. I can not say which occured.

Re: 280AI question

Upon just rereading the link, I see why my chambers are to the newer specs. The .280 remington specs were changed, and the changes followed over into the .280 AI specs. Thus a .280 remington go gauge -.004 will match the new headspace specs. I am using a newer go gauge where I am very sure that these specs would be reflected. (Actually my reamer probably does also since it is only about 4 years old) So my measurements may have no bearing since I was measuring new design brass against a new design chamber.

Anybody know the year when the changes to the .280 remington were made?

What about the year that the 280AI was granted saami specs?

Re: 280AI question

They changed the 280 remington specs also??!!

Next thing you know they will change the 30-06!

Here are the SAAMI drawings for the 280AI, before and after

and here is the drawing I have for the 280 remington

If I do the math 2.540"-.341"=2.199" to the neck/shoulder junction on the 280 remington

That means 2.199"-2.1741"=.0149" crush fit at the neck/shoulder using 280 remington brass in a new SAAMI 280AI chamber

Re: 280AI question

You can get the nosler 280ai brass from bruno shooters supply for $55 a box that's $110 per 100 and can't cost any more than $10-15 over norma. I like the quality of the nosler brass but only loaded up some test loads and haven't made ot to the range.

If you look at Nosler 280AI brass thats posted in their manual. the case body length is 2.097 and length to the start of the neck is 2.182 and case length is 2.525.

On a fired case Nolser 280AI the case body lenght is 2.100 and the length to the start of the neck is 2.184 and case length is 2.520.

I'm not saying the article in Gun talk is wrong but their SAAMI spec doesn't match Nolser brass they have the same body length but not to the start of the neck or case length and the reamer my gunsmith used was to the Nolser spec brass Nolser manual was printed 2007.

If anyone looks at Nolser manaul #5 printed 2002 and look at their spec on the 280AI, it's pretty close to what Gun Talk calls SAAMI 280AI they have the case to start of neck 2.175 length and body length is 2.090 and case lenght is 2.525.

Myself I think Gun Talk got acouple number mixed up mainly the case length to the neck and the body length is off?
