Re: 280 Ackley and 162 A-max

ray toy----I actually have a sako built 280 ack with a benchmark barrel. I shoot the 168 berger with rl 17. Very accurate rifle and with 54.8 grains I get 2950.

Re: 280 Ackley and 162 A-max

I have a 280AI built on a Sako 75 from a 270 winchester. It was done by Hart and has a 26" factory contour 1 in 8.5 twist barrel .313" neck

I am with Tom H on powders and bullets. Have had the gun for a few years and have tried

IMR 4350
IMR 4831
H 4831SC
RL 19
RL 22
RL 25

and finally RL 17

My load is 56 agr RL17 with the 160 gr Accubond. IMO the Accubond is as accurate as the AMAX and is a hunting bullet. The RL17 gets you to the velocity you want long before you are at max and gives me very consistant velocities with low standard deviation and excellent accuracy

One thing on the Sako 75 action that happened to me and may have to be addressed with yours. That is a 3 lug action and the lug that was lowest on ejection would hit the top edge of the shoulder/case body. It would still eject but would leave a mark on the cases and was irritating. Gunsmith beveled the edge of the lug and fixed problem

Re: 280 Ackley and 162 A-max

I have built two of them on remy actions. The first one I shot rl-22 and 162 amax's and the second I did rl-17 and 168 bergers and both shoot great and are scary accurate. Not sure on the first ones speed but the second one runs 3020 with no problem and shoots 3/8" on a regular. And just for your info I have shot a 16" rock at 1760 yards with no bullet flight problems.
