270 WSM Elk Load?

Hello all, a friend of mine drew an Arizona bull elk tag this year and I'm trying to help him work up a load for his hunt. He will be using a 270 WSM Savage Model 16 with a 1/11 twist 24" barrel. He has some 140 grain Nosler Accubonds and Winchester brass. The powders we have on hand are Hodgdon 4831 SC, 4831, IMR 4350, Winchester 780 Supreme, and Magpro. Anyone worked up any good loads with any of these? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Magpro is an AWESOME powder in the 270WSM. I haven't messed around much with the 140 AB's in handloads, but I do shoot alot of the 150 BT's and 150 PT's using RL22. With WW cases, CCI250 primers, and RL22, it'll run about 3130 with the PT's and about same with the BT's.

150 BT's

150 PT

150 PT Gold

I love the 270WSM and the 150 PT/BT combo. I actually wouldn't be scared to run a 150 BT into an elk, but since the PT shoots about the same, I will take the PT and run with it.

The 140 AB worked well in the Winchester Supreme factory loads back in the day as well.

Re: 270 WSM Elk Load?

A 140 Accubond under a stiff load of Retumbo has dumped a few elk for me, I had a Savage with a 1-11 and shoot a lot of the 140 Accubond and 140 Berger. The 150's shot very well also, I moved to a faster twist once the factory barrel was shot out and now shoot the 165 Matrix which ruins an elks will to live

I have heard Retumbo and RL25 work well in the 270WSM as well. Never messed with them yet, but if I were to start again, they would be tops on my list with the 140-160's.

Re: 270 WSM Elk Load?

If I were going elk hunting with my 270 WSM I would load either a 140 Accubond or a 140 TTSX bullet depending on how well my gun shot the load. I have loaded these bullets using IMR-4350, RL-22, and Magpro as well as I have lately started working up loads with Retumbo and W-780. My most accurate load so far is 140 Accubonds and IMR-4350, but I do not get over 3100 ft/sec with 60.5 grain. Magpro gave me over 100 ft/sec more velocity, just not quite as accurate.

You can give both IMR-4350 and Magpro a try and see how they shoot in your friends gun. I would not hesitate using a 140 Accubond to take an elk.

Re: 270 WSM Elk Load?

Thanks all for the input. He bought some Partitions to try and is still looking for a good load for his rifle. I'm glad to hear that the 140gr AB's work well out of a 1/11 twist. He's going to change to a faster twist after the hunt also. I told him about the Matrix bullets and I think he's going to go with 1/9 twist next. I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

Re: 270 WSM Elk Load?

The 150 PT's are pretty awesome on heavy game. They will penetrate like nobodies business and if you aren't shooting really long, they will work well.
