.270 Win loads?

Well, my 16 yr. old nephew's eyes DID bug out when he opened the box today. He actually asked me twice if the gun was really his (Mossberg ATR 100). I had purchased the gun a year ago at an auction with the idea of re-selling it, but with the job getting cut, it made a really cheap x-mas present.

22" barrel, box stock. He's probably looking now on the internet at the scopes that I and others here suggested.

I gave him a cost comparison on buying loaded ammo or rollin' his own, and he said "that's a no brainer. What do I need to get?" I told him that he needs to buy brass, bullets, powder and a die set. I have everything else.

So, I know the next question will be "What bullets and powder do I need to get?"

Suggestions anyone? 22" barrel, targets will be paper, crows/woodchucks/coyote, then maybe deer or antelope. We can't use that rifle here in Indiana for deer, but we can for varmints. My cousin lives in Wyoming and I can see a road trip coming in 2009.

Re: .270 Win loads?

Hmmmm, I always chime in on these 270 Win threads.

If the truth be known, I'm the world's least known expert on the 270 Win! That is since O'Connor left the scene.

Truthfully though, and expert on only one 270 Win. The one I've had for 40+ years.

I loaded it with two distinct loads.

One for Predators, yotes and smaller
One for Deer and any thing larger.

Both loads worked great but the Deer and bigger load was a bit wimpy on a 70 yard moose. May as well shot him with an arrow.

Best primers are Non Mag. CCI-200s work best for me.
Best powders

90 gr Bullet - 4835
130/140 class bullets - 4350/RL-22/Norma 205/MRP which is the same as RL-22 bit way less quality control from lot to lot.

Best bullets - 130 Sierra Boat Tail/130 Nosler Ballistic Tips/ 140 NABs, Bergers.

I loaded for the same model you mentioned with a 140 Berger and 7828ssc and got great accuracy. It took a nice cow elk at 80 yds. I didn't chrono the load.

Out of a 27" Lilja I expect 3200 FPS MV with 130s and 140s which is plenty sufficient for a 270 Winny.

The Sierra 90gr Hollow Point if my favorate yote and below load. I move it out at 3400 FPS and it drops like a cannon ball right at 420 yards. I've never hit a chuck, yote, ground squirrel over 420. At 419.5 they are DRT at 420 I just throw dirt on 'em.

With a 130/140 or even a 150 Ballistic Tip it should make one heck of a game getter.

Good luck.

Re: .270 Win loads?

I've got to say that the 270 is my favorite. I've only been loading it for 20 yrs.

There are so many possibilites that work great. My latest 2 loads for one of the 270s I own is 58 gr H4350/110 TTSX, and 55.5 H4350/130 TTSX, and the 130 TSX over 57.0 Re19. I use WW brass and 210M primers.

I've had a lot of success with 140 gr bullets and H1000.

Another 270 I own is shooting 130 Nosler solid base bullets over 58.0 Re22.

I've had countless accurate loads with IMR and Hodgdon 4350 and 4831.

I think 7828 is an unsung hero in the 270 for velocity and 4064 for accuracy with 130 bullets.

Re: .270 Win loads?

I use a max load of rl22 behind a hornady 140 grain boattail interlock

It'll bag anything between a chipmunk and a bull elk and maybe more

Re: .270 Win loads?

I have a Remington 700 ADL in .270Win and have loaded for it for many years. It has killed many deer, antelope and PD's for me.
Dug out my notes and this is what MY rifle likes:

1) 90 gr. Sierra HP, 60.0 grs IMR 4350, Fed 210 primer, bullet seated to .020 off the lands. Winchester brass.

2) 130 gr. Nosler Partition, 53.5 grs. IMR 4350, Fed. 210 primer, Win brass, .020 off lands.

I even got cast to shoot pretty decently in this rifle.

3) Lyman 280642 150 gr. cast bullet. Bullets were heat treated then sized to .278, Hornady Gas Check, Blue Angel lube.
(Note that bullets were basically .278 in size out of the mould. Only reason for running them through the sizer die was to lube and crimp on the gas checks.)
23.0 grs. SR 4759, Fed. 210 primer.
Consistently 1 MOA or better at 100 yards. Best 5 shot group was .842 @ 100 yards.

4) Lyman 280642 150 gr. cast bullet. Bullets were heat treated then sized to .278, Hornady Gas Check, Blue Angel lube.
(Note that bullets were basically .278 in size out of the mould. Only reason for running them through the sizer die was to lube and crimp on the gas checks.)
25.0 grs. IMR 4198, Fed. 210 primer.
Consistently sub MOA at 100 yards. Didn't write the best group in my notes.

59.2 gr. H4831sc

C.O.A.L. 3.230"
