264 win mag loads

A friend just received his new sendero in 264 mag. and I am lucky enough to break it in and find a load for it. Would like to shoot the 142 sierra, A-max or berger bullets. What is a good powder/load choice for the heavier .264 bullets? Also what kind of velocity can be expected? Thanks.

Re: 264 win mag loads

I'm tuning my buddies trigger and bedding his gun right now his barrel is a 25" Hart. He only shoots the 140gr SST's seated to the lands over 69.5grs of H-1000 lit by a Federal 210M primer in fire formed neck sized brass.
He worked up to 72grs I think before he saw that accuracy was still going south so he backed to this his.

I'm pretty sure that this is above listed book specs so start low. Not sure whay but he found that H-1000 gave the best ballance of velocity and accuracy. his Vels are right at 3100fps

Re: 264 win mag loads

I was talking to a buddys dad tonight and he has a .264. We got into a discussion about 24" vs 26" tubes. I say theres not a whole lot of difference, maybe 100fps at most. Now heres the thing, he has a 26" bbl and says he is getting 3300fps with a 140g using max load of H870. I believe him. Now the funny part is this, he says his friends .264 has a 24" tube, and only shoots them at 3000fps. Thats 300fps difference, and to me, that doesn't seem realistic. I wasn't gonna argue with him because obviously he saw it over the crono, but I have a very hard time believing that 2" of bbl will give 300fps. In all the articles and tests I've seen done, 2" of barrel will give about 60-80fps, at most 100fps. Thoughts??

Re: 264 win mag loads

as odd as it seems it is possible , I have a 24" 300Win mag barrel that consistantly shoots faster than any 26" I have had , I've also seen two gunns with the same length barrel shoot the same exact load with over 200fps differance in velocity.
Some tube are faster than others?
I'm sure that their are better powders than the H-1000 my buddy uses but thats what his rig liked for decient speed and good accuracy.

I do not know if this is indeed common or not but I have seen the same difference.

BTW 67 gr of rl25 did about 3200 fps with the 140's for me in a 26" super grade.

My thought is that he needs to actually chrono the load

H870 is only good for big magnums and the heaviest bullets. I really don't think that it can achive the max velocity in a 264. Faster powders or should I say the optimum powder for a given barrel length and bullet weight will achive the max speed.

Re: 264 win mag loads

budlight,

I have a factory model 70 with a 26" barrel in .264 WM and I'm shooting the 140 Bergers with healthy doses of H-870. Average velocity is 3248 fps.

I would have never thought H-870 would have been my rifles powder of choice but it is. I consider myself fortunate to still have an 8lb jug .
