Now Pop, I'm going to give you this load and trust you will not use this bullet on game .

85 gr Retumbo under the 240 SMK gives me 2850 fps. I could gain another 100-150 fps but this load shoots under .25 MOA EVERY DAY.

Is 3000 fps feasible? What is the BC of this torpedo?

Re: 240g SMK in a 300 RUM?

3000 fps is gonna be iffy. Mine has 30" 4 groove Lilja. I could get to 3000 fps w/this setup but my best accuracy was @ the 2850 fps mark. I'm not sure what a guy could get w/a 26" bbl. The bc is .711. Of course as the bullet slows, Sierra shows it to degrade a little.

I wouldn't use those SMKs for hunting either !

Re: 240g SMK in a 300 RUM?

It would seem to me that with our 26" factory tubes, that 2800-2850 is all we could expect with decent accuracy probly at the 2800fps mark. Even at that speed at 500 yards, I obviously would not want to be a deer in my sights. I think the 220g smk, is actually little better route, but thats just my opinon. BC is .629 and you can get it going 3000fps. I have shot them out to 1150 yards and was happy with them. I have not tried the 240g smk simply because you have to buy them at 500 at a time. I dont exactly have $200 to try on a box of bullets.

Re: 240g SMK in a 300 RUM?

My gun likes 89 grains of Retumbo for around 2850 from a 26" barrel. Extremely accurate.

My favorite was 99 grains of H870 when it was available for about 2980 but had decided to reduce that to 98 for hot weather use which would put it around 2950. But then the powder went away. This load was also extremely accurate.

US869 is on the way though....
