14 twist wont stabilize 55 gr bullets

so i just bought a remington sps varmint in 22-250. i had some loaded rounds from a different rifle using 55 gr nosler BT and H380 powder that i used for bore sighting. i thought i would try some of the new nosler varmageddons with the flat bases and the polymer tips. i tried loads with varget and h380 and all the the bullet holes in with the varmegeddon were oblong and appearded not to stabilize, but the Nosler BT looked fine. the barrel is a 14 twist. does this sound right, would a flat base make a difference like this. i would think a 14 would stabilize a 55 gr bullet. thanks in advance.

The 14 twist is for a bit lighter bullet. It will do better with a 40 grain. It is possible that it will shoot a 50grn. Just have to try. I shoot a 22-250 with a 1 in 12 twist it will shoot a 50 ro 55 grn great!

Sure your load is developing enough pressure to drive it fast enough ? I have shot 55gr Vmax bullets out a 1:12 223 so I would have thought that with all the extra powder in a 22-250 you should have no problem ? The Hodgdon manual says 38-41 gr of 380 to yield 3500 to 3700fps from a 24" barrel. The same bullet in my 223 is listed as going 2800-3100fps and it was fine in a 12 twist. I'm pretty sure I was not at a max load either.

I have a 22-250 in 1:14 and have never had any issue stabilizing 55gr bullets, but I don't think any were flat base . . .

50's proved to be more accurate for me and I stuck with them.

Re: 14 twist wont stabilize 55 gr bullets

i used 37 38 and 39 grains of 380 to start with. and 35 36 and 37 gr of varget. showed no pressure signs. new brass, remington lr primers. i thought it was strange that the boat tail ballistic tips flew fine or appeared and shot ok as well. but the flat base varmageddon were all over the place and created oblong holes. leads me to belive it has to do with the flat base design some how. just wondering if im missing something.

No damage to your barrel crown, right at the bore ?

Seems like you are a ways off a max load though, might try bumping it up. You might just need a bit more speed. The flat base may be more sensitive to any damage at the crown than a BT.
