I plan on using this for western hunts on elk, deer and antelope. At 8 1/4 pounds it is heavy but I carried a Weatherby Accumark this past elk season for 9 days without too much trouble but if I can keep the weight down that would be a good thing.

Im looking for something that has turrets to dial the range. I have a leupold 4.5 - 14 scope with the Boone and crocket reticle on my Accumark which works fine but Im looking to expand my horizons so to speak.

I was considering a Huskemaw scope but one of my hunting buddies said there are a lot of scopes out there that would accomplish what I want to do. I was leaning towards the Huskemaw because it seems like it would be farily simple in the field. To be honest the spinning of turrets and counting clicks or hashmarks is intimidating to me.

I anticipate a budget of about $1,200 to fund a scope purchase. If anyone has any scope recommendations for me that would be great. Im feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the chocies out there right now.

Thanks in advance. Mike

Mike

If weight is an issue then the Leupold MK 4 would be the way to go.

The night force is very heavy and so are the Huskemaw and IORs so
check the weight of each scope.

All of the scopes mentioned are very good and you should make your on
decision .

And don't be intimidated by the turrents. in order to shoot long ranges
you will have to learn to use and trust them.

Good luck

Night force is the best scope i have ever had.

BUt there is one very big problem with buying a night force scope you will want one on every rifle you own. so you better have deep pockets.

get a night force you will be happy you did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

So does that mean this summer when I get up that way (got orders to Norfolk, but still have friends in Quantico/Fredericksburg area) you'll teach a turret newbie how to use them properly???

Can you all recommend a book or video that would help me learn about longe range shooting by dialing the turrets? If I lived closer I would take you up on your offer to teach me. Mike

I love my nightforce but if funds are tight the Bushnell 6500 is supposed to be coming out with tactical turrets this year you could spend the extra money on a LRF or ammo for practice. You should learn to crank those turrets as it is the best way to shoot long range.

Mike, go to this website, he has a video that's priced reasonable and will help get you started. ..:efensive Edge - Custom Gunsmithing::..

He is also a member of this forum and a very knowledgable person in this arena.

Sounds like you're getting some good advice on scopes, I have used the Leupolds myself and have found them to be awesome scopes. I haven't tried the Nightforce, but most people say they are quite a bit better. Weight and the mighty working mans dollar have kept me buying Leupolds. Someday I am going to try one though. Take a look at the Leupold Mark 4. Good luck!

Re: Which scope for my 1st rig?

I had a Nikon 4-16x50 (non tactical) on my 7mag (it is now on my 308) and I just ordered a set of target turrets for it. Should be here this week. It is a great scope with perfect range for ethical hunting. I am considering a Nikon 6-24x50 as I have some large fields I can hunt. Nikon makes great products.
