Savage Edge

Hello everybody,

I have been a long time reader of this site and learned a lot from you all. I am hoping to do some elk and maybe bear hunting when I get out of college in a few years but I currently don't have a gun for it. For the last 10 years I have been shooting a 25-06 and 22-250 out to about 600 yards so I'm not new to ... I guess medium range shooting for you guys I was wanting to go ahead and build a 338 edge so I would have a couple of years to get to know it before chasing elk with it.

I guess my situation is this. Like I said before I am in college right now, so effectively I am dirt poor. I would like to use the 25-06 or the 22-250 (both savage 110s) as a switch barrel for the 338 edge so I can save on the new gun/ new optics and allow me to shoot more. From what I can tell, most people either build these on a 700 remy or a savage with the RUM action. I was wondering if it is possible/safe to just thread an edge barrel on my standard long action and if not, what would be a good alternative cartridge with similar performance?

Thanks for the help.

definitely not on the 22-250 as it's a short action. I'm not to sure why not on the 25-06 as it's a long action but I'm not to sure how strong your action is. I know you wouldn't be able to do a switch barrel because the bolt face would have to be opened up.

Actually both of them are long actions, I got them that way so I would have more options building. And for the bolt face, I was planning on getting a new bolt head so I could switch that out too. Thanks for the reply.

That's great. Just to let you know there's a savage 300 rum barrel in the classified section for sale cheap. It's not an edge but pretty close and cheap. Excellent ballistics and more than enough for anything in N. America.

the 110 action will work for what you want i think you need to rework the mag well and bolt face/new bolt . at one time all savages were long actions

You said they are both Savage Model 110's, so that would make them both long actions (3 digits = long action, 2 digits = short actions). You could use either one of them, however you would need to get a new Bolt head and install it on the end of the bolt. You can call Sharp Shooter Supply and talk to Fred and he will tell you exactly what you need to switch them over. It takes 5-10 minutes to change the bolt face.

Savage actions come in 2 different size barrel shanks. Some of the earliest RUM's in the savage were on the small shanks (what you have) 1.055". Later all the RUM and WSM Savages were built on larger shank barrels 1.120".

You can order RUM, WSM or Edge (338-300 Ultra) barrels from several companies in either large or small shank.

I'm building an Edge on a Short Action Savage (model 12) that was originally a 300WSM (Large Shank). Short Actions will eject a spent 338Edge brass, but to eject a loaded round, the bolt must be pulled. It will obviously be a single shot.

Hope this helps,
AJ
