remington project

Ok i got a remington 700 cdl sf ordered in a 30-06. This is gonna be something to shoot out to 500-600 yards. Be used for deer, antelope, and maybe elk havent decided. For scope im thinking vx3 3.5-10-40 or 4.5-14-40 with cds? I would like some opinions on the two. Also what else would you recommend? New stock, trigger etc...???

Re: remington project

Either scope will fit your needs. I prefer the 4.5-14 but I spend a lot of time shooting past your 600 yard max range.

The CDS turret will also fit your needs with a 200 yard zero range. The CDS set allows 14 MOA of adjustment from the closest to farthest setting.

As far as the stock and trigger, I would shoot it as is and see if they meet your needs. The newest X Mark Pro trigger that Remington uses is a hit or miss in my experience. By that I mean that some adjust rather well and fit my needs, but others just don't. Your expectations may be quite a bit different than mine, so shoot it and see. I have never had a stock perform worse after a properly done pillar and bed job, but your rifle may shoot fine without. Once again shoot it and see if you are happy with it.

I do not agree. I have a Vxr 4-12 that has 4 rotations at 12MOA of the CDS dial down from zero. I have not turned it up as far as it goes but I have had the dial spin on me while jerking it out of a saddle scabbord and other things, so I know exactly how many turns of the dial from the bottom my zero is. I have it on a 243 and shoot out to 1000 yards often. CDS is cool!
The X mark trigger is not as consistant as my other after market triggers and I love the HS Precision thumbhole stocks at 12.5 LOP

Re: remington project

I run the VX3 3.5-10x40 on my deer rifle (308 win). It's an ok scope, but I don't think it's great. For out to 600 it should suit you well. Probably going to come down to personal preference on the choice of those 2 scopes in the range you're talking.

I've heard that the VX3 2.5-8 is a lot nicer. Supposedly everything came together real well in terms of clarity and light transmission on that scope. I can't say for sure, since I've never had any actual experience with it. When I bought my VX3, I was trying to choose between those two, and got talked into the 3.5-10 just for the extra magnification.

Get your eye behind the glass on both of those before you choose. Agree that you can't go wrong with either, though.

Rooster
We are both correct. I made the assumption that most folks with a CDS would be using it as a (C)ustom (D)ial (S)ystem. When you order a custom dial etched in yards, instead of using the standard MOA cap, the custom cap will have a zero stop to keep the scope locked in that one revolution. That makes it easier to keep from getting lost in the revolutions. The Leupold standard is 15 MOA per revolution but the zero stop takes up one MOA of adjustment, hence my comment that you are left with a total adjustment range of 14 MOA.
If in fact PSESHOOTER stays with the standard MOA cap he should have multiple revolutions at 15 MOA per revolution.

I am a smarter man now and we can blame that on "orwapitihunter"! I guess that is why I like this forum so much! It is a damn good place full of smart people.

The thing about those custom dials is the zero stop would be nice but you are stuck to one bullet per cap and limited to 14moa! Although they are simple to change.
