Re: need starter rifle

I also would recommend a 7mmRemMag. However, I would recommend the Savage. It may be a bit heavier than the Tikka, but the 116 now has an AccuStock (full-length aluminum bedding block, free-floated barrel). I just recently bought the one with the detachable box magazine, and I'm shooting 162gr. A-MAXes out of it. With a 0.020" jump to the rifling, I'm getting about 0.4" groups for 4 shots @ 100 yds. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Re: need starter rifle

One consideration you need to keep in mind is that you will be hunting in brushy area's and cross canyon clear cut shots. I do not think I would want to have a deer, elk, or bear run on me, not even 50 yds. I would much rather have it be dead right there. think about that when you look into caliber selection, my experience is that the 7mm's result in a animal traveling on you even with heart lung shot placement.

Re: need starter rifle

i would say savage 116 FCSS in 300wm or 338wm should be albe to get scoped under 9 pounds easy i like the tika but light rifle + big cal=big recoil at 700 yards in windy conditions a heavy bullet will buck the wind better and have some energy to put a hurtin on the animal dont get me wrong i hunt with 7mag but i dont hunt bear and elk just deer usually closer than 300 yard here hard pressed to find 500 yards to pratice long range at hear

Re: need starter rifle

thanks for all the info guy. so i normally hunt with a 243 ,25-06, 308 but my go to gun for elk and bear is the 25-06 killed elk out to 350yard only shot 3 with it. and a bear with a 243 at 380 it was 485LBS blackbear. so im a big fan of shot placement . so out to 400 im fine with them but i want something for that long 6-800 yard shot and will not take the shot unless everything is perfect the wind, the animal broadside and so on. so you guys dont think the 7mm is the right cal. for this you think the 300's or 338 is the way to go..im new to the big bore guns so thanks for all the info guys

Re: need starter rifle

As you have seen thru your own field experience, with proper shot placement a 7mm Rem Mag is perfectly capable of getting the job done @ 6-800yds. I personally would rather be sending a high BC 30 cal 200gr (minimum) boat tail down range on an elk.

But then a year or two ago, Shawn Carlock posted a pic of one of his customers that put a elk on the ground at around 700 yds (or so) using a 140gr load out of 260 Rem rifle he built. The key was perfect shot placement.

The Savage 7mmRemMag kicks more like a 270 Win/30-06 probably a little less. But this is due to the P.A.D. recoil pad. I was going to have a muzzle break installed, but decided not to, because of the minimal recoil.
