Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I dont reload wish I had time to start even another hobby but can't. I have decided to purchase the Savage 12BVSS in .223 with Nikon Buckmaster 4-14X40 scope. I didnt like the feel of the 12FV.

Well I guess you already decided, so not much to add now other than I would always take a 22-250 over a 223.
Been using them since 1975. Oh - On the scope, I would of went with the Monarch.

Update
OK a little update, I purchased the Savage 12VLP in Stainless. In 22-250, more people voted for this caliber thanks. I will just replace the barrel when I need to. I liked the Low Profile even better than the BVSS. I purcharsed the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14X40. Rifle was $629 scope was $249 not bad so far IMO.
Now I need to know what scope mounts and rings to put on it. Don't want to go cheap here. Any advice? Thanks in advace. |

Ramg66,
I can't really see going crazy on the bases/rings when you've tried to stay within a budget on the rifle/scope. What I mean is you can really drop some jack if you're not careful. Seems like anything with the word "tactical" attached to it is automatically higher priced. There are some rings and mounts out there that can cost $100-200, or more! The cost of over-engineering. I could see getting a Mil-spec mounting system for a predator hunting rig if you're going to have to beat them off, but that's not the case. I guess the mounting system depends on the distance you plan on shooting. If a scope doesn't have alot of internal MOA you can get a Picatinny style base with MOA built in. I've seen them in 15/20/25 and 30 MOA. Rings to fit this type base can be gotten relatively cheap. Warne, Weaver and Leupold (PRW) come to mind. Another good system to check out is the Burris Posi-Align. There is also a insert kit that you can purchase separately that adds extra MOA to the system. Worked pretty good on the rifle I used it on. Go to MidwayUSA and look under rings/mounts and optic mounting systems. Lot'sa options. Does your Savage have the flat or round rear receiver? JohnnyK. |
