My sweet new rifle

Hey guys.
I used to browse these forums alot before my computer went haywire and died, but now i'm back [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] .

I recently purchased a Savage M10FP in .308 for some long range hunting and target shooting, it was topped with a cheap Nikko Sterling 4-16x50 w/ 30mm tube but the elevation and windage drums were back-to-front and i've had to send it back to the factory (Still waiting for it to return), so now i have a brand new rifle in my safe that i've only been able to put 8 rounds through [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] . From the one 3-shot group i fired at 100y with Remington 150gr Core-Lokt ammo i got a group of 17mm c-t-c!!! I know you can't really determind accuracy from one 3-shot group, but it shows potentual. Needless to say i'm keen to try some 168gr Matchkings and A-max's [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] .

Also when i ordered the rifle i Specifically asked for Leuopold rings and bases but when i picked it up the guy at the gun shop had ordered Millet mounts and assured me they are better....which i doubt. have you guys got an oppinion of these mounts? (These have horazontal recoil stops and are not 'turn-in' style)
Also could you give me a couple of links to where i could buy a +20MOA base? I have only found one shop in australia with them and they are asking $220ea which i think is too high.

Hey Ice,
To really do your rifle justice, chuck your Nikko Sterling in the bin, spend some of your aussie dollars
and invest in some quality optics, you will not be dissapointed with the difference when sight up through a top notch scope. You mentioned Leupold Mounts, well their scopes are excellent, they will stay with you when you upgrade your rifles, otherwise you might end up with the situation where you upgrade your rifle and HAVE to upgrade your scope.

That 17mm (whats that about 11/16") group is very promising and carefull handloads with MKs will bring you 5 shot 1/2" groups and again a better scope will help you realise your rifles potential.

$220 is indeed steep for a 20 moa base even compared with what we here in Blighty pay for them, about £100 is the going rate, plus about the same for a set of tactical rings.
You can easily spend one and half times the price of your rifle on optics and mounts.

Check out Warne Bases, they make a 20 moa rail base for savage rifles. It will be quite a bit cheaper than others and I think the quality is pretty good.

I don't know know about import laws where you are, but I would suggest that you contact Richard Near at http://www.nearmfg.com/ He is in Canada and makes probably the best 20 and 25 degree bases in the world. He ships them all over the world, and would know how to ship to you.

For now the Nikko sterling is just a make do scope untill i can afford a Lynx 10x42 with covered turrets, which i have heard is a great scope for the money and optically on par with the leupold.

As for mounts i'm just going through Brownells and i like the look for the nightforce tactical and leupold Mk4 rings.
