Re: how well does your sporter shoot at long range?

All I have is sporters. They are all pretty accurate for factory rifles in my opinion. My 25-06 is a win model 70 classic sporter. Will shoot .4-.5" at 100 yards. Shoots 3.5"-4" at 500 yards. My newly aquired rem 700 bdl in 270 is showing me some promise. Shoots .5-.6" at 100 yards, 2" at 300 yards, 5" at 500 yards, and I was 4-4 on a 14" gong this evening with it laying prone w/bipod at 800 yards. My other sporter is a rem 700 lss in 300 RUM. It shoots very accurately. Shoots .5" at 100, 1" at 300, 3" at 500, and has given me some 1/2 moa or 4" groups at 800 yards. There is nothign done to these rifles except a trigger job and some reloads. I shoot my deer rifles out to 800 yards and my RUM out to 1150 yards. To me, for factory rifles, I'm stretching it, but thats all part of the fun. I use Leupold vx2, 6-18 target scopes, except for a MK4 that I have on my 300 RUM. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any deer out to 600 yards, or an elk out to 800 yards with my factory sporters. Given good wind conditions and laying prone with bipod.

Re: how well does your sporter shoot at long range?

These were all fired with my 270 Allen Mag sporter based on a Savage M111 receiver, 30" #6 contour barrel and Factory Savage Sporter Laminate stock. Not exactly a true sporter "weight" rifle at just over 10 lbs but it is extremely portable in the field.

Please keep in mind this is not a store baught rifle, its one of my full custom Xtreme Sporter rifles so that is one reason for the performance. The other is the Wildcat bullets used.

This is the lightest rifle I use in the field currently for long range shooting. My load is the 169.5 gr ULD RBBT loaded to 3265 fps using WC872.

These are actually fireforming loads that made this group!!

First two shots out of the cold barrel to check actual bullet drop against predicted bullet drop, pretty close.

This was a one shot kill at 1114 yards. Within three weeks last spring, the 270 AM scored three one shot kills past 1K on chucks. 1098, 1114 and 1248 yards. All shot off bipod and solid support.

This test group was fired at 930 yards, again, out of a cold barrel to check actual bullet drop against predicted bullet drop, again very close. This was days before taking the 270 AM on its first field test

The result!!! Very happy rifle owner!!!

Now obviously these are the best of the best groups. They are not all like this but the rifle is a legit 1000 yard rifle on game the size of chucks and larger.

With a properly build sporter rifle in the 8 to 10 lb range, loaded with the proper loads and topped with a quality scope and having the practice to use everything together, 700 yard shooting is to be blunt, a chip shot. That is if you know when to and more importantly "Not To" shoot!!

Kirby,

Regarding that 450 yard target. Is the rifle sighed zero @ 100 yds?

I believe it was 1.5" high at 100 yard for that hunt.

This is from a stock Sako TRG-S 300 win mag. The target on the left is 200SMK's and the target on the right are 210 Berger VLD's. Groups were shot at 305 yards. This rifle shoots about the same size group all the way out to 500 yards and it will shoot like this all the time if I do my part. I have been also playing around with the 220SMK and those group a little tighter but I do not have a pic of them yet.
