Now to throw a stone into your pond.
300 WSM

It's impressive but for mass availability .308 does sound appealing. I was also under the impression that 30-06 and .308 are good until at around 800yds with reasonable energy, velocity, and accuracy.

Help with a budget 500 yard rig please

First of all I want to say how great this forum is. I have been reading for a couple days now and you guys are awsome. Thank you. On to the business at hand: 15 years hunting up to 350 yard shots with success. Problem is I have little or no confidence past 400 yards. Just sold my 7mm mag Browning A-bolt tired of being sore. Can you guys point me in the right direction for a rifle and scope combo I can shoot Elk with up to 500 yards for under $900. I am looking at a Rem 700 in 30-06. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million guys

ArbrnRanger,if you want to stay with that budget check your local pawnshops great deals to be had!

I just looked at a Rem 700 in 30-06 with a Lupy 2-7 scope (if I remember right) $279.00 in good shape. Last week I got a Savage 110 in 7mm mag synth stock with a Burris scope for $239.00 out the door from the same one.

Is this a great country or what?

How about a Remington 721 in 30-06 with Bueller rings as a starter for $275 shipped. After that get Burris' Ballistic Plex 3X9 and shoot with confidence. I have it ready to go (the gun anyway)

I have a 308 in a Remington 700VLS. This gun works magic for me. Its easy to load for. There are few bullet/powder combinations that I would not take deer hunting. It is the most acurate over the counter gun I have ever bought in my life. It will kill deer without any reservation or hesitation. I think shot placement is the most important thing here.

Double lung'em and they don't go far!!

Gold

Welcome to Long Range Hunting. Being new here and this as your first post I'd guess that you sort of skipped over some of the "ground rules" section.

I'll refresh a few basic rules for you.

1. We don't discuss ethics.
2. This is the Long Range Hunting site, we discuss the techniques and methods to hunt critters Long Range and 500 yards certainly falls into that category.

You are welcome to continue posting but please refrain from questioning other hunters methods with regard to distance(s).

Also, perhaps you could rework your first post a bit.
