Good hunting scope?

I am having a 7mm RUM built, not quite sure of all the specifics yet, but curious as to what you suggest for a good scope.!

(please lets save the "Go 30 Caliber" talk for later, as when the time comes i'll get one, but right now is the time for a 7)

My hope is to have a gun that I can kill deer and antilope with at 800 yards, and a scope to help in every way possible.


Are there any scopes that have adjustable BDC's?

Red field did make some 7 mag scopes with cartrige changes for different bullet drops but I have had a hard time getting a straight answer since they became a leupold company.

Budget - $300 would be great but if $600 has to be done than so be it, but probly cant do much more than that.

Man, I wish I could feel good about a $300 scope....nowadays the $600 scopes are pushing it. Some of the better, higher end scopes also happen to be the better hunting scopes. I've always liked Leupold and Ziess is becoming my favorite for withstanding recoil. These 2 would give you a better chance at withstanding the ultra mag recoil. I've also been pretty impressed with the Bushnell Elites 4200's and 6500's, as far as their rugedness, but your gonna pay for those too. Nikon will give you a lot of scope for your money and I was all over that because their glass is excellent, but the 2 that I have owned are all over the place. One is a $500 Monarch and the other is the lower end pro-staff that I've got on a mini-13. The monarch is on 223 bolt action and neither will hold a zero. If I were going through the trouble of having a gun built, especially an ultra mag of any sort, I wouldn't budget on a scope. I've got an off the shelf 300 ultra mag that sits under my bed, unfired, and un-scoped because I've been saving for more than a year for some good glass.

Oh yeah, for deer and antelope at 800 yds......you are gonna want to invest in a good scope. I'm not even at that point, and my $1000 scopes give me fits! LOL.

I have a 300 RUM and 338 RUM
I used the Picatinny 1 piece base (Long action) on the 338 RUM with Weaver Tactical rings (six screws on each ring)
On the 300 RUM I used Weaver Picatinny style and the Weaver rings
For a scope Simmons Whitetail 6.5x20x50mm from midway on sale now for

Guy's I hunt with have Leupolds and they can't beleve how clear the Simmons are. I can lay one bullet on top of each other at 200 yds with both guns (my loads). Both the RUMs torture scopes but this seems to work fine for me.

In that price range you really are lmiting your options. Forget about buying any new scope for 300.00 that will work for your needs. Think more in terms of 450-750.00 for a good quality used scope.

If you really feel like you'll be doing a good bit of shooting beyond 600yds you really NEED at least 10-14x at a minimum.

Good options would be a vortex viper or leupold VX-III or if you can find one of the leupold tactical (not MK4's but tactical) you can probably get into any of the threee in that price range. You might also consider the Leupold VXII 6-18x40mm.

On the first three go for the 50mm OBJ if at all possible. They gather considerably more light than the 40 or 42mm OBJ's which can really make or break you shooting in low light conditions.

You can order custom turrets to match your caliber that will work sufficiently well to get you to 800yds once you have settled on a load. You may however need to consider getting 2 different sets if some of your hunting will entail extreme changes of elevation from where you normally live and shoot.

Might look at SWFA SS scopes. Possibly a 10x or 16
x. They are awesome scopes and the reviews say it also.

A $109 scope for a 7 RUM! I wonder how many shots before it will fall apart!
