Thanks Bob, I'm taking notes. You mentioned accubonds for reloading, I forgot to mention that I'm in Ca. where they are banning lead which leaves me with a Barnes or Nosler option for hunting. Any experience with either of these? I probably should start asking questions on the reloading forum.

I have no experience with the Barnes on elk. I shot a few small whitetails with the 6mm Barnes X and with the blue thing. I tried the one with all of the rings and it did not work for me but that gun got rebarreled anyway. Try them and see.

I feel for you on the lead ban but I feel for the condors too. I lost a set of over and under barrels on the switch from lead shot to non-toxic shot. The makers of the Bismuth shot claimed it was safe in all barrels which was a big whopping lie. At least I managed to hit the goose but that one goose cost me about $600.

Bob, looked up the Leupold VX111 onthe cabelas site @ $799.00, Which reticle do you recommend? It doesn't seem to come in a mil dot, I guess if you rely solely on the windage/ elevation knobs and use a range finder the fine duplex would be ok?

Send Bailey1474 an email and ask for a price on the fine duplex Long range.

My advice on objective sizes is this. If you are 40 years old or more you have lost or are fixing to lose a lot of night vision ability (as well as hair) and will need the 50mm objective in order to see animals the last 30 minutes of the day on cloudy days at long range. On clear days you can probably see right up to the end of legal shooting but or maybe a few mintues before with the 40mm. The 50 will sit a little high so you may need to have a cheek pad. Lots of bad things associated with getting older.

Turned 40 in july, got glasses 6 months ago and lost half my hair 7 or 8 years ago, guess it's 50mm. I'll send that e- mail. Thanks.

piutemike,
I also have the Model 7 300 Rem SAUM. I am in the process of doing the same thing to mine. Not a lot of aftermarket stocks for the M 7 out there. I have been looking at HS Precision, they have one that has a varmint barrel contour for bigger barrels. The stock is the first thing I will do. I did bed the factory stock its ok but not good enough. I have been shooting 168gr bergers and they have shot well, but they wont fit in the magazine. The next bullet to try are the barnes TSX. Good Luck

Does anyone have any thoughts about using a heavier barrel contour and keeping it 22" long ? I really like the model 7, its a real handy size to carry.
