7mm-08 or 7x57 mauser?????

Which should I build for my girl? She is 5'2" , about 115lbs. Looking for pros/cons, and why. Will be an all around rifle up to elk & sheep at reasonable distances. Thanks for the help... Will be using mainly 162gr A-max & 168 bergers since that's what I have for my 7RM.

Wow, no takers. I think this is an apples to apples comparison, but I'm leaning toward the old Mauser as of right now. Anyone have any input?

Well with the Mauser you will have plenty of mil-surp to use for plinking and practice. On the other hand the 7mm-08 is going to be a real shooter. So I suppose what it is you want, go with it. Just look and see what brass is available for both calibers. If you want Lapua brass, then neck down .308 or neck up .243. Not sure if Lapua offers brass for the 7x57. Just my thoughts.

Re: 7mm-08 or 7x57 mauser?????

I've had both. Now I have 2 - 7x57. Shooting the bullets you want to shoot I would choose the 7x57 because it better handles the heavy bullets, up to around 140-150grn. they are neck and neck after that the old one wins hands down.
As for the brass issue by 2-500 rnds and you will probably have enough for a life time in a hunting rifle. I bought 300 rnds in the early 90's and have supplied 4 guns and still have some left.

Based on your needs. I would recommend the 7/08 for several reasons.

1= The rifles that are available in 7/08 are many.
2= The ammo that is available (Lots of choices ) and in the Remington ammo you can get
the Managed Recoil for youth and people that cant handle the recoil.
3= If you reload you can get brass cheap and in several caliber's (243,260,7/08,308) and resize
if you have to.

Even though we like them the controlled feed actions are more difficult for the beginner to master
than the push feeds are.

Also I would recommend a lighter bullet,Something around 140 or 160.

Just my opinion

thanks for the input. Valid arguments for both, but I'm still having trouble with the decision. Thanks again!

Re: 7mm-08 or 7x57 mauser?????

I've been shooting a 7x57 since 1979. I shoot the 162 grain a-max on top of ww760 powder lit by a CCI primer. This combination gives me 2500 fps and less than 1/2 inch three shot groups at 100 yds. Before I tried the A-max I used Federal factory loads, 175 grain round nose. About 25 years ago I bought two boxes and when I shot the last one I tried to get more and lo and behold Federal had discontinued them. So I had to develope the A-max load. I love that 7x57. Light recoil, handy and accurate, what more could you want.
