6.5-284 on short action?

Out of curiosity,is there any reason a short action from a 308 Win couldnt be rebarreled for 6.5-284?

If you aren't going to shoot the long bullets out of your rifle, your short action should be fine. However, the 6.5x284 is at its best when shooting the long bullets such as the 139grn Scenar, 140 or 142 MK and the A-Max. I would suggest getting a long action, I think you will be happy with that set up. I have 6.5x284 290nk built on 8.5 BAT action and it loves the long bullets. My favorite bullet so far has been the Lupa 139grn scenar. My 6.5 also loves the 142 MK, I will begin some more load work with 142grn MK and H4350. If you need more info, let me know. Good Luck.

If used as a single shot the long bullets could be utilized, couldnt they?

Yes, I believe they could. It just depends on how far out you are going to seed your bullets. My C.O.L for my cartridge is 3.160 and it is .010 into the lands. My loaded cartridge would have feeding problems in a short action. It will depend on how far you want to seed your bullets.

Balistic
If you use the long bullets in a short action you might have to remove the bolt to take out an unfired round.

Yes,thats a possibility I hadnt thought about. The feed port on the Rem is 2.400" and the bolt goes about .650 beyond the rear of the feed port when opened.
Wildcat, with your 139 scenars about how far is the base of the bullet into the neck of the case?
Ive seen a few of the 6.5s built on a short action but have no info of what bullets they were shooting.

The O.A.L of the 139 scenar is 1.368. They are seeted .353 into the neck.
