.50 caliber short x .338

I'm tring to get infromation on building a .338 caliber from a .50 cal spotter round. This cartridge is shorter than the standard .50 cal. I understand that this is a very good long range wildcat being shot, but I can't seem to get information. Can anyone help of direct me to were I can obtain the information....tahnks rceglar@statecollege.com

Never heard of it but it sounds interesting. I wonder what would happen if you went the other way with it an necked up from a .338 lapua to .50 cal? Would you have a big version of a .35 herrett?

One of the guys that posts on here had one of the 338s on a 50 BMG. I think there are better choices for a case to start with like the 416 Ridgy or the even bigger 408 CT. I have been shooting 1k and 1 Mile BR matches with a 338 Lapua (IMP) for 2 years now and have hunted with it also for 3 years and taken deer with the 338 out to 1225 yards.

I have work on one ( 338/50 short 35 deg
shoulder ) making case need a full tooling shop equipement , barrel in 338 cal with 2 inch diameter are very very costly ( 40 inch lenght ) but that fun if you are mecanical skill and fully equiped .

If you go in 338/50 carefully check carbon fouling, too much powder capacity of canon powder in a small bore is a nightmare .

on 50 BMG I think that 0.375 cal on short case ( 2.5 inch ) with long neck can be the right solution to balance water capacity case and bore ratio .

now with 408 case that possible to make more simple if you have a good action , main problem with big case is to find a good big action and reasonable price and AVOID any small action modification .

I have now a 338/378 Wea tight chamber 34 inch closely finish that will work fine under 2000 yards without too much additional cost

I have worked on a couple 338 wildcats based on the 50 bmg case shortened way up but not the spotter case.The spotter case came in 2 different configurations as far as the primer is concerned and for what your considering you would want the one without the flash tube.The other would require you bushing the flashhole in order to get a reasonable size.The action as DanTec stated needs to be 0.804 on the boltface for the spotter case and the Fisher shell hoder can be had for around $850 shipped.You can go to www.biggerhammer.net and click on the 50 cal discussion board.You will find what your looking for there.

A friend of mine worked on this short 50 necked down to 338. He did some extensive testing with frontal ignition and compressing the powder using 300 gr Sierra MKs, and the best he could get was 3300 fps. The barrel was long (30" or longer), but I don't remember how long. The 338/416Rigby would just about equal it with a lot less trouble. I don't know if things would be different today with the new powders available or not. This was about 10 years ago.
