.338 rum vs .338 edge
How much difference are we talking about ballistics wise. Are the advantages of the edge worth going with a wildcat round?
Thanks

i'm gonna disagree with 150-200 fps difference between these 2 rounds. i'd say it's more like 50-70 extra with the edge. holds about 6 gr of powder more.

Thats about right. According to Quickload it is just about a 6gr difference (about 7-8% improvement, which is a little more than a 338RUM AI from my understanding) . Quickload estimates between 150 and 200fps difference with the 250gr and 300gr bullets for the same pressures in a 28" barrel. I did a quick search here and saw quoted 100+fps difference in a couple threads. If it's only 50-75fps then there is no explaining the number of people choosing it over the 338RUM and the number of barrel makers that have reamers and supply barrels in the 338-300chambering.
I don't have any direct experience with the Edge and was only going on the estimates from Quickload.

i have one. it will shoot a 300 at 2800 if i push it, which i don't like to do. i have a rock, 5r, 29" barrel. Roy has a 338rum that shoots a 300 gr well up in the 2700's with a factory 26" tube.the difference between the 2 is not as much as most think. it will take a lot more than 6 gr of powder to make 150fps difference.

OK, I believe you. I've only played with a 338RUM. I'll have an Edge to play with this spring. I'll delete my post above.
BTW: Shawn has stated that his 30" will push the 300SMK to 2900fps.
Merry Christmas,
AJ

I have built a bunch of 338-300 ultramags and have not seen one that will get 2900 fps out of the 300 matchking without ruining the brass. Doesn't mean it can't happen, just don't get one expecting that velocity because that would be above average. I have a 300 wby with a 26" barrel that shoots the 180's at 3430 fps and the 200's at 3250 fps. Those are the accuracy loads. Straight 300 wby. I have a 257 STW and a 338-378 that are also way outside the scale. Sometimes you just hit a barrel that just goes crazy I guess.
