280 in a 16 inch barrel
I am wondering what I would have to do to get a 280 or 280AI to shoot out of a 16 inch barrel? I am so used to a 24 or 26 inch barrel and hearing about powder burn time and things like that. I am not always sure what it all means but I am learning.
Since I just ordered a rifle in 26 inch to get extra burn time for a 280AI how or what would I load to make it go a long range out of a barrel 10 inches shorter?

The 280 doesent lend it,s self to a short barrel because of
the powder it uses.
The 7mm/08 or the 7mm/WSM / 7mm saum would be better
choices for a short barrel.
The 7mm/08 will exceed the 280 in a short barrel but the reverse
is true in a longer barrel.
The 7mm/WSM or the 7mm/SAUM should match the 26" 280 with
a 14" to 16" barrel.
The 260 rem would be anoyher good choice .
A of these rounds listed do very well with short barrels.

I think that the only thing your gonna gain for a 16" barreled 280 is a head ache from the concussion , its gonna be !! LOUD !!
Burn rates are differant with differant case shapes and capacities as well as the bullet you want to shoot. , if you want to shoot a 180gr bullet out of a 280 then your gonna want a slow burning powder to give you a longer pressure curve and more barrel to allow for the powder to burn fully , if you try ti use a fast powder like one would use with shooting say a 120gr bullet your gonna reach higher pressure problems well before the round has reached its accuracy potentioal. The shorter fatter cases are a bit more effecient so they will get better velocities out of shorter barrels. If your set on the 280 then I'd suggest at least a 24" barrel to get the good out of it.

I'm planning a 17" savage striker in 7 saum. 1-8"twist. I plan on shooting 162-180 grain bullets. From what I've found the short far cases are the way to go with the shorter barrels.

Use the same powder as you would for a rifle barrel, or maybe the next step faster.

The reason I ask is I am trying to setup a rig for the long range handgun shoot in WY in June. I just want to make sure I make the right choice. I ordered a barrel and then told them to put it on hold until I made up my mind. I am trying to make up my mind between a 6.5 284 and a 280 or 280AI. I have limited experience hand loading so I just want to make the best decision and go with it. That way I have a solid platform to build from.
